are you sure the ee is a roo? looks like a girl to me.. ee are very easy to sex and i may be wrong but she has female colors imo but then again i could be wrong. how is is she?

My white EE looks exactly like yours Cynthia as far as feathers and the whole comb/head thing...her tail is that shape and size. I was thinking the same thing, that it sure looked like a hen...unless he/she is crowing or something haha!

Newbie here (to the forum and to owning fowl). Just posting on this thread to say hello to all my fellow Utah neighbors.

Hi neighbor!
welcome-byc.gif
I'm in Clinton! I've got 7 golden laced wyandottes incubating right now, due to hatch 1/8.

Does your brother process his own meat birds? We're contemplating getting some this spring. It was my dh's idea, oddly enough. He just watched Food, Inc., and thought that maybe we should start growing our own chicken meat. I have ZERO interest in the "harvesting" part of meat birds, and want to get a processing person in place before we get to that point.

Edited to add: Hi Janet! You posted while I was, so I didn't see you to welcome you.

This link is so interesting! I read the first ten pages....now I am worried about my two black babies because many say that most black EE's are roos, rarely pullets. Crossing fingers! I could see the differences though and will know what to look for

Thanks for posting that birdman!

Yes he does process his own birds and I have helped him several times and we now have a good system in place to process them, he actually does it as a co-op with several people chipping in to pay for birds and feed. The first time I helped him we processed 35+ birds in an afternoon, but that was with a slower (clumsier) system, now with better equipment and process I feel confident we could do more.

Thanks for the welcome! I had a chicken once show up in my horse barn in early 2006. I have no idea where she came from, but she had a neat personality to me. I called her Bernice. She'd run to me at feeding time and follow me around, and rested at night in the stall with my favorite horse. She also laid an egg every day in the same spot where I kept my hay. Then, about two months later I went out at my usual morning feed time and found a few feathers where she'd hang out in the barn. No more Bernice. Never felt inspired to get another chicken, but I also oddly swore off eating chicken the day after she showed up.

This summer, I moved to my current place that came with 3 geese (although I sadly recently lost one) and have become quite attached to them. I would like to add a couple females to the remaining pair. Also, since my property is ideal for waterfowl, I am trying to hatch a small flock of ancona ducks and am very excited to learn more about geese/ducks.
