Utah!

Happy New Year to my friends!!!!

I've only seen chicks at the IFA, Cal Ranch and Peterson Feed up here in Davis/Weber counties. I thought conditions were fine at all.

Dallas green as well, that's where my brother orders from. If they can order the breed I want I will order from them too, Ive only heard good things about them.

Lisa! Are your black girls walking ok? Mine has crooked toes..no biggy right? I have had chickens with a little crooked toe and be fine. But my black girl doesn't want to walk..for long. She walks a little ways, and then lays down. It looks like when she walks, it is because of her hips..or top of legs. She will walk a little, then lay down. If I don't pick her up, she will just lay there. She is acting fine, when I pick her up, she is still sweet.
This isn't good. You can't fix bad legs at this point. And where she does have a bit of a crook in both middle toes, that makes me wonder about the hips. Chickens can walk fine on a crooked toe..it isn't that! I hope yours are doing well, and I am glad you didn't get this one. I don't know if she can make it in life like this. Will be watching her. She eats only when in the coop. Gets up to eat there, but then down. Outside, always down.

I can't believe this. She's looking so pretty. Puffy cheeks, but mostly, she is a sweet one. I'll be stressing over this one for a while.

This is so sad! I will look mine over more closely, one of them won't stay on the roost, she goes to the nest box and lays in it to sleep. The other seems to perch a lot. I will go out there in just a bit and let you know, I have not noticed her toes or anything...they are hiding alot right now from the big girls. I hope yours does ok, they really are turning out to be so beautiful. Crossing fingers for her to be well

Cynthia---I checked my girls out and I do not see crooked toes....they are walking around pretty normal, one just prefers to lay down still at night in the shavings. All the white is gone now, and the cheeks are really getting puffy and you can see the beards starting...they are growing and changing really fast. I hope yours will improve and be ok, hang in there! Maybe she got injured somehow? Hoping it is a temporary only condition. I am rooting for her! You have to have your black EE after all those hatched black chicks! Let me know how she does. They really do have a sweet temperament, not flighty or squirmy at all anymore, the feather footed one LaVerne is a little shy, Shirley is more fearless with people and other chickens, but they both have a sweetness about them....my big girls are starting to pick at them a little, but I have sticks and boards in different places they can run behind and they are handling the cold pretty well. The heat lamp is on out there at night, and they sneak out from behind the boards and drink and eat when the big girls are asleep and Shirley gets up on the roost to sleep with them, and LaVerne has been getting in the nesting box and laying in the shavings. I think LaVerne probably stays warmer, the nest she lays in is pretty close to being under the heat lamp, she is smart to do that! They seem healthy so far and still no signs of being male as far as I can tell.

Sending love to your girl----and hopes that she will improve!

What about slipped tendons? One of our girls has a crooked middle toe and seems to favor that side. She gets around fine, but you can tell it bothers her sometime. It seems to bother her up higher, in her hip area.

I also sent you a message.

Cynthia--I think you should still be able to fix crooked toes at their age. You can sometimes even help an adult with crooked toes. There are instructions for Chick Shoes or Toe Taping on the website in my sig, if you want to try it.

I don't know what the frequent sitting problem would be unless maybe a general health/disease issue or nutritional deficiency or some kind of congenital defect. You might find something on the webpage that would give you ideas--I actually don't remember everything on my own site

I wouldn't have worried so much if it were just a couple of crooked toes. But, my DH and I decided it best if this little one didn't stay like this.

We kept trying to keep her up. She just kept going back down. Not the toes being crooked, it was up in the hip area. She couldn't couldn't get her balance on the roost outside unless I put her legs right on it, then I had to hold her until she settled..yep..down on her feet. Then, she wanted off. Went to get off, and she let one leg go, but the other wouldn't let go. ? I've never seen anything like this in any of my chicks I've raised. I always watch them for a while before I put them outside. She was fine..so I thought.
Lisa, I'm so glad your babies are doing well. They really are pretty aren't they? And so sweet. My Ameraucana is sweet, my blue girl.
hen-thusiast..you are so sweet. Wish I had seen your message sooner. I used to rescue dogs. Paid a lot of money into vet bills for them, then trained them, then found the right family for them. You have some lucky chickens there. I am keeping you in mind. If I think a chicken will be ok to live their life out with a slight problem that can't be fixed, I'll remember you.
In the meantime. I am hatching more eggs out. The EE's and the Ameruacanas, and some Silver Partridge Rock that dickhorstman has.
He was going to send them today, but, the weather is cold there, so waiting until tomorrow.

Ok this post is making me cry! I am so sorry Cynthia. It makes me so sad that you got that far with her and then it ended so sadly. I hope your new hatches have great luck....I will keep you posted with pics so you can see how they do turn out. Ugh.
My DH's dad passed away in the night last night at the nursing home, been so busy on the phone, and trying to help him....I feel like there is sad stuff all around

Not the way a New Year should start. Here's to a better week next week, and a lot more smilies after this bad week is put to rest. Cynthia, be sure to keep us posted on your new chicks. I really like seeing the progress reports and am especially excited for you now to get the flock of girls you want!

Sorry she didn't make it. Guess our hen is going to be lonely for a bit. We've thought about putting the blind bird in with her, but the blind one gets around too well. Who would have thunk?
