Utah!

Whittni---oh she is pretty! I like the white

Mine is a buff with black tail, posted pics a few pages back. I just love her. She is so teeny but so fiesty. I am hoping to try putting hatching eggs under her and to see what kind of mom she will be. My bet is that she would do really well, but I am new to this so who knows! She goes broody for 3 ish weeks at a time, won't lay at all and just sits and fights anyone who comes her way. Then she starts laying and could not care less....and she lays really good, every day when she is laying. Her eggs are these little creamy off white "pearls", they really seem to have a pearlish shell, I just think they are adorable. We never want to eat them because we like to admire them....I always make sure I have one left so that if she goes broody again I can still admire her little egg on the refrigerator shelf haha! I am really interested in this breed, just very unique I think! I read that some have a lethal short leg gene.....half of them die in the shell with the short legs, half make it, the others have legs a little longer. I do not think mine has the crazy short legs based on the pics I googled. My husband keeps saying he wants to put her in the fair because she is so dang cute but I do not know much about that, or if I could if her legs are not as short as they are supposed to be. Thanks for sharing!

LaCasa's little bantam is on post 268. She's darling.

Whittni, so is yours! I have a cochin bantam that lays a pretty decent sized egg.
Lisa, you're so funny..you save an egg when she goes broody? So you can see it? Now you know what you have to do. Post a picture of that cute little egg..have it beside another normal sized egg from one of your big girls.

I read about the gene thing too, I thought mine was just a banty and it was normal, the short leg thing. You could buy some fertile bantam eggs from somebody with a rooster? Then get anykind of chicken you want

Edit: Thanks for sharing the page #, minus the 0...here's the LINK

She's too cute!

Cynthia, Yes I save them! I already posted about being an egg dork, I am an egg admirer in every fiber of my being haha! Here are my little pearls. They are actually good sized for an 18 oz chicken! (Last I checked, she was pretty scrawny after brooding the last time, she has probably gained a little back over the last week, she eats constantly

This is my EE egg, my Buff orp egg, and my jap bantam egg. My EE egg is a standard large egg size, the BO is bigger. I read somewhere that it takes 4 chabo eggs to equal a large, but I am sure hers are bigger than that

I usually use 3 for recipes calling for 1 large. I wish you could see the sheen on them, they are really nice

That's awesome! The hen that started laying for me is a Barred Plymouth Rock. I have a large pet taxi that I hauled out there two or three weeks ago to give the girls some shelter while the coop was in progress, and she loves it in there. She'll put herself to bed in it sometimes, it's pretty cute.

Thanks!

I understand the coop stalking thing. What ones are you waiting on? I have a little Silver Laced Wyandotte that I think should start soon. Her waddles are nice and red and she started singing the egg song the same day I got her, which was a couple of weeks ago. I will be very excited to find one from her. I also have a Black Star hen, but we aren't sure how old she is and I don't think she will lay again. My best guess guess is she is at least a couple of years old.

Whittni, Congrats on getting your first egg! That is very exciting news!

My eggs go into lockdown tomorrow morning. I'm pretty sure that all 7 were alive and kicking when I candled last night. Being the ultimate dork, I'm trying to set up a webcam so it'll broadcast the hatch. Part of it is dorkiness, but part is that I've had a couple friends express interest in watching the chicks hatch. Problem is, if I invite TWO (+ their kids), we would have 11 kids crowded around, trying to watch, and that just sounds crazy. I figure this way, I can broadcast it and anyone who wants to see will get a front row ticket. I'm not bothering going live until they actually pip.

I LOVE those little tiny chickens. They are so cute!!

My SLW started (not exact memory..I think it was 23-25 weeks?) Hope you get yours soon! I am waiting on a partridge cochin bantam, who got roughed up a while ago by an EE that turned mean and I had to get rid of. She is almost 9 months old! I do not know what, other than the stress, would be making her take so long. She has never squatted, has hardly any voice, really grayish red combs so I wonder if somethings just not right with her. Also a BR that was born July 20. She has been squatting for 3 weeks, should be anyday. Only others I have are two EE that are little...born mid november--should be April-May for them. I keep looking out there, over and over each day, thinking maybe one will get laid in a weird place in the run or in the straw, but nothing

Lisa, look on ksl or even ask around for eggs. You would be surprises how many folks in your area have chickens..with roosters.

Oh, and it really does sound like your barred rock is going to start soon. I'm thinking my barred rock should start by the end of this month, or first part of next month. Post a picture when your get your egg..I want to see what I will get.

You know I'm loving that blue egg. Nice size too for an EE. Cute little egg. Maybe I will post my little bantams. I already took a picture of my Partridge Rock's "little" egg she is laying now. Remember how she laid that huge first one, and it was double yolk? Well, now it is just a bit larger than my bantams! I'll see if I still have it in photobucket...

Yep, it was the first one in there... the first egg of course is the Leghorn's, the second one is my Ameraucanua's, and the third is the Partridge Rocks that I had lay huge at first! Then, have that one right next to my bantam's egg... Almost the same size! I hope she starts laying larger. My EE's egg was small like that in the beginning, but now lays a nice size for an EE..
