and red thank you for the kind offer. i may not be able to keep a rooster but i am happy i can have hens and that is the major thing for me. bun anyway how many chicks have you hatched out so far this winter cynthia?

Wow. I kind of feel for you guys with some of the stuff I have going on. No heart problems or anything, just other stuff...... 'nuff said. Bird-man, if I could, I would totally have a foster rooster for you. I think you said that you can't have roos where you are, right?

Sphinx, I know that two of those boys you gave me will likely end up in the pot when they're big enough, but I sure love holding them and watching them. The red one's pretty brave, and I think he's my favorite to play with. My girl chicks aren't as used to being handled by me, so they're still shy, but the boys are fun. I think I'm going to try turning them out into the yard soon here so they can run around. Hopefully without my rooster seeing them, heh.

So, found out something kind of interesting about my leghorn that the coon/skunk/jerk got last week. I'd noticed that she had bumblefoot, and I was getting set to do home surgery and get rid of the infection for her. Well, after she met her demise, I was examining the carcass and lo and behold, she had a nail in her foot! It looked like it had been there for a while. The good folks I got her from told me that she was fond of jumping up on top of her coop and then over the fence, so the best I can figure is that she had the bad fortune to step on something that was loose and no one ever saw it. At least she doesn't have to deal with it any more. (And sorry to bring up a morbid subject!)
A nail?! Good grief. That poor chicken. Yes, glad she isn't hurting any longer. I'll bet you are glad you found out about that.

Hi Guys! Actually this is Utahchicken Mom....yes, I've joined the ranks wholeheartedly! May have to get my own sign on. After reading most of the posts, I am struck by how kind and considerate you all are. Chickendad also has some of the same problems healthwise as some of you. This project has helped him get out of his funk by giving him a project he can control and take pride in...especially since he lost his job because of health problems. And finding a new one is going nowhere! But I digress. I have never raised chickens before. And even though my grandparents had chickens, we only got to visit once a year for a few days...memories of being chased by chickens! lol. Probably deserved it, we were a rambunctious group. So I have a question. For some reason, our chicks are fascinated with one corner of the brooder. Constantly scratching and pecking. Of course, they have scatterd food all over the brooder so there is food under the shavings. Hubby said that was the corner that had a small spider in it once. Do they get fixated on something? I know chickens are very intelligent, just wonder if they can have OCD? lol. Thanks for being there, ucm

Utahchickenmom...I like that..yes, get yourself a picture..avatar..and go for it. We would love talking with both of you.
hmm, my chicks will scratch at one area if some food had been dropped in that area..like near the food dish. They scratch and scratch right there. If they ever get down to where the newspaper is underneath the corners, they will scratch and scratch and scratch at that. I wonder if there is "spot" of something stuck down there that they can see. If one goes after something, then they are all right there for it! lol..

Brad, I have no idea how many chicks I've hatched. I just hatch! I love to hatch those little fuzzy butts. They are so fun to watch. Guess what? I was wrong on my lock down day for the BO. Thought it was tomorrow, but it's today. Imagine that, me, forgetting! Good thing I keep a good calender for everything. I can tell you when what was hatched, I just don't write down how many hatched. Only if I have a bad hatch, like the only one that hatched from some EE's and Amerauacanas. I have the one EE outside with the pencil rocks. I do believe I lucked out and it's a girl. I've been wanting that black EE or Ameraucana for a long time..since Lisa bought those blacks from me, then mine had that sad problem with the legs.
It snowed a bit here in our area last night, but not much..hope that other storm fizzles out for our valley, and just the mountains get it today.

Hi Cynthia, We just have pine shavings in the brooder so when they scratch all of that away, they hit the bottom of the tub. We are changing out the bedding weekly and washing out the tub so don't think anything was stuck there. And you are right, if one starts scratching intently, Everybody else has to come see what's going on and help with the scratching. They are so cute. It is amazing to me that they have no adult to show them scratching, pecking, preening or eating and yet they know what to do. Can't think of many other animals who can do that. Wouldn't it be nice if human babies could do that? rofl. Thanks, ucm

Good job! Welcome to our fun family :) Love you guys' matching usernames lol. I should get my DH on here. "DH de La Casa" haha :) He would never do it though, he thinks I have gone 'chicken crazy' on here yapping all day and fawning over my girls. But I know he loves thse chickens, he just does not want to say it out loud!

UCM--Those babies are growing fast! I had not looked for a few days. Do you guys have names for all of them? Do tell! And I am curious--what is the box on the wall of the brooder?

Hi La Casa. Even though utahchickendad's signature says his wife thinks he's crazy, I don't.

The little box in the side of the brooder is a temperature monitor...wireless. Talk about chicken crazy!

Hubby is very computer savvy...something I am not. But I do love the peeps.

Yes, we have named them. 3 BSL's are" Bertie", and "Pearl" (in honor of some great aunts who were little biddies) and Lilith (in honor of "Fraizer" because she is a real witch!), the chipmunk colored AMER is "Monk" (but a girl), the other one is "Speckles" and then the GSL is "Blondie". Thanks, ucm

Welcome UCM! Glad you have your own official profile

Cynthia - YES! When I saw that in her foot, I thought, "Well no wonder she had an infection! Poor girl!" I'm very relieved that she doesn't have to deal with that any more, at least.
