Utah!

Wow. I candled those eggs. Could not wait a second longer, I thought if there is hope in there I had to know. The four that I set later (on 3/21) are all still moving, I cannot believe it! The 7 that I set on 3/17----one looks maybe ish, it seemed to be moving....the others I have no idea. Pretty still but I will keep trying to see. There were two that look just a bit smaller so I am thinking they might be gone. I cannot believe that anything survived that, they really felt ice cold. Chickens are amazing! And I am so glad you guys told me not to throw them out~! I am really REALLY surprised. Now if I can try not to do something else. So far I have dropped the tray, tripped while walking with the tray, frozen them out last night, and gone way too hot when the sun came out in the window. If any of these DO hatch....they will be tough little birds. Or be ultra paranoid...

Phoenix, I won't make it to this one. I really wanted to but other stuff more pressing came up...hoping the next one. I really want to see the fancy birds! Are you guys going?

Tonight I brought 8 of our chicks outside with me and the kids (and some friends kids) while my husband and his friend worked on the coop. The kids are all very excited about the chicks and keep chasing them and grabbing them. At some point one of the buff orpingtons got hurt somehow. She keeps pulling her right leg up to her body and when she does walk she limps a little. I picked her up and wrapped her in a rag and just held her for a bit and she was okay and relaxed, but when I put her back in the brooder she was still limping a bit. I looked at her leg and there is nothing obviously wrong. What should I do?

Sorry to sound mean, but what you should do is not let kids chase chicks. We don't even let little kids hold the chicks unless they are sitting down, legs out front, and we're right there with them.

Yeah, I know. But there were 6 kids out there and two weren't mine. I repeatedly told them not to chase the chicks. Any advice on the injury?

Lisa, so glad that some are making it, I didn't know they were left out all last night? Wow, pretty good, they got a bit chilly in there, thinking, mama get back here! When they are that size, they do pretty good
Well, got the blood work back, doc called to let us know that Dallas has a pretty high white cell count. So, seeing as he is going potty so often, when he's awake, he's guessing it's a bladder infection. Not kidney because the blood test would have shown something else..can't remember all of the fancy doctor words. He did say that his electrolytes were low, but, he said that was expected because he hadn't eaten. He has eaten now! Not much, but has eaten a little.
The Vet says this is a good antibiotic that is a wide spectrum, and would be the best for now. And, he is expecting him to be back to his normal bounce off the wall self in a few days. I sure hope so. I have also been worried about his weight. To me, he's so thin. But this vet says, I love his weight! I see so many overweight dogs in here. It's so hard on their knees and hips. Yep, I knew that one. My Shcnoodle is a little over weight. His right knee is bad. When we left, there was this huge..very over weight golden lab. Now, that is even more hard on a big dog.
Anyway, thanks for all the well wishes. He got his first pill as soon as I got them. Twice a day for 10 days. I just pop it in the back of his throat, close his little mouth, and wait till I see him swallow. Now, to watch his other potty..you know what antibiotics do to us..does the same to animals!
Shinx, have fun at the chicken show, and whoever else is going! Sounds fun.

I should get a picture of just my Sussex. She is really pretty on the front. Waiting for more white to pop out through her back.

You guys are great!

Kimmy, I think all you can do is just watch it at that age. She may have just had a bit of a sprain happen. She may look better in a couple of days. Let us know!

Hey Elk!

K, now that I posted my more unkind post than usual, I wanted to say miss ya'll - I've had stuff going on and haven't had a chance to talk chicken.

Second, has anyone noticed an increase in prolapsing? I've had two this past year and I'm taking one in that was my neighbors. My first got well but is impossible to tell if she's ever laid. The second was an older banty and she did get better and is back to laying.

In all my years, I've never experienced it then three hens. Anyone else notice an increase? Does it just go with the territory like molting?

I'm so far behind on posts I hope I didn't miss anything major and hope this post finds you all well!

I keep thinking of something I forgot..so here's my latest to say forgot..lol

Lisa, don't throw any of those eggs out. If they are too dark to see through, just go ahead and put them in lock down. You may get some surprises. :)
I have a lot of my Araucana eggs that are dark. Can't see a thing. Will put them into lock down anyway. Good luck..Wed. will be here before you know it, then, Thursday, Then Fri! Fri..you will hang over the bator just watching for that first pip!! Then, you will worry, it's been so long since it pipped. lol..can take up to 24 hr.s after a pip, or even longer. Oh the wait, right Shinx?

Thank you so much for all that info! I need all the advice I can get. Yes the plug came out at midnight or so I think, and I noticed at 7 this morning! And I turned the heat off a few days ago so it gets chilly in here at night. I really cannot believe there is anything going on still, crazy. I will try all and see what comes. If nothing happens with that first batch, I am hoping at least those second ones will hatch around the 11th. I will get that second bator Saturday so I have a place to put them and keep turning while batch #1 is in lockdown. Whew. This is stressful enough I do not want to think about the actual pipping and zipping I may need a sedative to get through all that. And I am NOT patient like you and Sphinx, so you guys may need to remind me 'step away from the bator'!!

So glad to hear Dallas is doing ok, the problem was one that could be fixed, thank GOODNESS! Poor little thing, just so glad to be on the mend I am sure. Dogs are the best. Unless they are like mine and eat the chickens and terrorize them constantly....
