Utah!

X's 2  You said it perfect Brad!  I was just going to post those suggestions..get her off of that med. feed!!  And yes, she should loove the plain yogurt.  Not the ones with the fruit in it, they get more of the pro biotic in the plain.  Bet she clears up pretty quick after getting her on reg. chick food.  But, if she doesn't, I would be for separating her from your others.  I know..sad.  :(

oh good so i am not crazy for thinking that lol :D

Donna---funny image, picturing that.....I get my son to chase 'em back in....I am just too out of shape and old or that lol! I got your eggs set, last night, and VERY excited to see what happens. Thanks again for everything! I am glad to hear your hatch is better this time :)

Red---hope your baby is feeling even better this evening :) Same to you Birdman. I feel lucky right now, no injuries (for once!) and no fighting so far with the teenagers out in the big girl coop.
Just got everything cleaned out, the nice new shavings....don't ya wish it would just stay nice for a day or two lol I need to make myself some poop boards :p I am always a little mad at my girls the morning after I clean the coop out.

Sphinx--

Yes, I live in Bountiful, but we have 11 acres in Duchesne. I co-own the land (and this house) with a couple I've know for years and years--our house is actually a large up and down duplex, kind of, so they have their own house downstairs and my boys and I are upstairs. The neighbors probably think we are polygamists!

In any case, we kind of trade off going up to the land. The hens bury the eggs in the bedding (heaven forbid we actually use the rollaway nesting boxes!) so they stay a pretty even temperature. Pain in the butt to collect them. Since one or the other of us are up there every 2-3 days, it seems to work out fine. They have a rain-water catchment system feeding into 55 gallon drums with piping coming off for watering nipples on each side of the coop. Insulated the heck out of it with reflectix and turned it into a miniature fort with hardware cloth and such! My room-mates tend to go up there on the week-end (in fact, they just got back with another 10 fertile eggs from 2 days of collecting) and my boys and I usualy go up there once or twice a week. We originally bought that land for the boys to play on and dig to their heart's content, so they love going up there. We go much less often in winter, of course--maybe once a week total--but they aren't really laying them, so no collecting. It's all worked out pretty well--I raise the chicks, pick the breeds, buy the feed and do most of the general cares with the boys, my room-mates do most of the building and designing of the coops and watering systems and feeders and such.

We are going to be putting up a second coop in the next few weeks for my son's Breda and my other son's Welsummers (fortunately, those aren't coming in until May!). The current coop, I think, is 12x16? Has three pens in is, which currently have the BLRW's and the freedom rangers and rocks, but once the meat birds are gone (which will happen pretty soon if I keep letting them out!), those pens will be for the Cream Legbars and possibly some Blue Isbars. I won an auction for a dozen of those chicks on rarebreedauctions.com, but I have heard from the seller even though I emailed them and sent the payment cvia paypal. Making me very nervous....

8 BLRW chicks are now running about the incubator, with another one starting to zip. Can't see anything yet on the last three. They are all so stinkin' cute!

Lisa--

I usually do have the boys do the chicken wrangling, but, sadly, I didn't take them with me that time, since it was just going to be a quick trip! That'll learn me, eh? Oh, I so hope those eggs hatch well for you! The chicks are so cute, and all the parent stock are very nice!

15 days until my..your..our....ducklings hatch jwoo! So excited!
I candled again last night (I am a candling addict) and they were all moving! The twins egg is doing good also! It moved once so..yay!

Awesome! That is so cool. Can't wait till the 15th to see some pics of the cute little things! My daughter was sooo excited when I told her that one of them was twins.

Alright, I've had it. I'll never get any more birds, because whenever I do, someone else dies.

I was letting my two teenager chicks run around out back for a little while today, like I've been doing since I got them to my house. Usually I sit out there with them because I'm a protective mommy, but today I was doing other things and settled for checking on them now and then. Well, I forgot about them for a couple of hours, and when I checked on them just now, something killed both my girls. I've had them since they were babies and now they're gone

I am so mad that I left them alone and just assumed that they'd be okay free ranging in the yard. I should have gotten a run done sooner and I should have been out there with them. I was so happy to have them around. I didn't think I took such bad care of animals, but I've lost so many chickens this year, I'm sick.

Awe, I'm right there with ya.

I thought my post posted..but I can't see it. Our new pup (8 mo old shelter rescue) killed (well, was eating alive) my only EE (that started laying blue eggs this year).

I was crying, mad, crying, so I know how you feel. The teens must hv not notice her escape and when I saw her (as I was coming home fm shopping) I asked my DD to go get her back in the coop. I assumed she had and w/in 10 minutes later the new pup has her on the lawn.

I brought the hen (a pure white EE) next to our fireplace and cried and prayed for God to let her live. She didn't. :(

We worked with the new pup and he gets one more chance or it's back to the shelter. I sure miss our lab that claimed the chickens as his...

Thanks Elk. And I'm sorry you've lost one, too

I would be pretty upset in your situation, too. I hate it when an animal suffers.

Upon further investigation, I believe there is a chance that my brother's husky could have gotten them while he was out on his cable. My brother was NOT happy with the possibility and made sure to show the dog the kennel I had the birds in and let him know that it was off limits. I'll tell you what, I'm sure going to be keeping a tighter watch on the rest of my babies. I just don't want to lose any more.
