Well, today............wasn't my favorite day. But at least I still have five happy, healthy little babies out in the garage, and I'm not seeing the blood like I was over the weekend. And the next time I have to drive a ways to a store, I'll be sure to check my receipts BEFORE I leave. I went to Cal Ranch and bought a 50 lb. bag of feed, muscled it out to my car, got home..........and realized I'd bought medicated feed! D'oh! So away I went back to Cal, grumbling all the way, especially because I knew I had hungry babies waiting for me in the brooder and I didn't dare put more medicated feed in there. I'm very relieved to have something non-medicated for them now. They love the stuff.

And as if that wasn't enough fun, my poor rooster caught my wrath today. I have been very stressed about a lot of stuff for the last several months, and today when I went to see the remnants of my flock, my rooster decided it was time to attack me. Really, I can't blame the guy, since it's Spring and he hasn't seen me for a few weeks, so what else was he supposed to do when I got close to the ladies? It was the most pathetic attempt at spurring I've ever seen (he only has nubs) but it ticked me off enough that I grabbed him. Then, when he decided to bite me, I flipped him upside down and hauled him over for his two hens to see, then went to show the horses. I feel bad because I know he didn't enjoy it, but he needs to remember that I'm the boss, and he works for me. I still feel like a jerk, though. Blah.........

Hey Sphinx, I got some pics of the boys for ya! They're sure getting handsome.

I know the pictures aren't the best. They weren't too keen on being caught and made to pose for mugshots. I can see hackles coming in on all of them, and the tail of the first boy is just starting to curl down, I believe. He's very pretty. The tail of the third chick is noticeably smaller than the other two, and he's the only one with a single comb. He's also my favorite. Full blown mutt, sure, but he's a sociable little fellow that warmed right up to us after we'd held him for a minute. He seemed to like the attention.

Awwww, thanks for the pictures, Red!!!!! They are getting awfully handsome! This is definitely a lesson for me. I know it's stupid, but some people at this site make this big deal about purebreds and I think it's made me think purebred=pretty, mutt=ugly. I know better with other animals, so I don't know why I thought that with chickens.

As for your rooster, I think that's really good that you did that- you HAVE to show dominance, otherwise he'll constantly be coming after you. I think I wasn't nearly as aggressive with my old rooster. Truth be told, he made me a bit nervous.

I'm a little bummed- my best friend from jr high/high school is in town this week. We'd had plans to get together for lunch today, but she texted at 11pm to cancel on me. She's not the most dependable person, so this wasn't a surprise, but I'm still disappointed.

I do still get to visit another old friend today- she's having a baby tomorrow and wants me to do maternity photos for her before she gives birth. She's expecting her 6th baby. She has FIVE boys, and doesn't know the gender of this one.

Aw Sphinx, I'm sorry your plans got cancelled today

I know that when I don't get to see a friend, I'm always bummed about it. Hope the day goes smooth and well for you, nonetheless. Yep, I think I can understand why some people prefer purebred birds to mutts, especially if they're trying to preserve certain characteristics that they find appealing in that breed. I have seen some purebreds that are gorgeous, but I also like seeing the random combinations that pop up with barnyard mixes. It's kind of like a chicken lottery for me

Welcome, Doughie! I'm glad to see that Lisa is getting more chicken neighbors up in her neck of the woods. Makes it easier to swap chicks, muahahaha.

Here's your morning chickie update: All five babies are still doing well, and no more blood has been found! I think the yogurt has really helped my EE baby's system. Most of them are starting to turn into teenagers now, and four of them (Peachie is too small) are exercising their wings and flying up onto the side of the brooder when I have it open. I've started taking them out and allowing them to perch on my hand for a minute so that they get more used to being handled. I sure can't wait to get them outside! (IN a run, of course!)
