Utah!

corvidae, if that Marans was a freebie "packing peanut", I would guess it's a good chance he's a boy. That said, I am very, very tempted to take him off your hands.......... (self proclaimed chicken addict, remember?)

Cynthia, that is so cute with your Yorkie and BO! I'm glad to see that Dallas is feeling much better. He's sure cute! We have some neighbors that have what must be a mini/toy Yorkie. He is the cutest little doggie and I love it when I see him outside. They call him Bob. Oh! - And your black EE looks girlish to me, too. I tried to see any pointy saddle or hackle fathers in the pictures, but they look nice and rounded, from what I can tell. Here's hoping!

UCM & Chickenundercover - Aw! I'm a little jealous, now. I work out in Magna, but it's only part time. However, if you guys ever feel up for a jaunt, I'm in West Valley. Not much set up yet, just a load of lumber for the coop and a brooder that somehow gets wet and dirty no matter how often I clean it.........

Lisa, those eggs are beautiful!

Ohhh, by the by, if anyone is looking for chicks that are a little bit older, I saw that they had some in the Tooele Cal Ranch the other day that are about 1-2 weeks old. All in good health, so far as I could see. We asked one of the workers about when their next shipment of turkeys would be in, and she told us that the last one had to be sent back because the babies weren't very healthy. So, I'm hoping they get a new shipment in soon. My boyfriend really likes to raise a couple of turkeys every year and compete with the 4H (even though I tease him about trying to outdo 7th graders

I'm thinking it's a 50-50 shot on the Marans, just because it came from a breeder rather than a hatchery, so I tend to doubt they have training on sexing the chicks. Dunno, though, could be wrong!

Okay, here are a couple of pics of the cream legbars. They are still pretty skittish from being shipped about in a box, so its kind of hard to get good pics of them, but these aren't too bad:

They are all 5-6 weeks old and fully feathered. As far as I can tell, there are at least 5 hens and probably 6 boys, but I'm not at all sure about that. Slightly harder to sex them when they get older and lose that dot on their heads. Plus, they move around so fast its hard to keep track of which one's I've counted! When they've had a few days to settle in, I'll take a closer look at them and probably band them according to probably gender.

Chickenundercover, sounds good to me! We will have a show-and-tell day, yay! I would actually be pretty excited to see other peoples' birds in person, even if I'm not handling them. Don't want to spread germs or anything. I just like to see the different setups. (Haha woops, edited to add - That sounded rude. I should clarify and say I don't want to chance spreading germs from MY birds to anyone else's flock. Just in case)

corvidae - That's true. Where are you located, again? I know you've said your location before, but I'm having a senior moment. Was it Bountiful? If you decide you are indeed getting rid of that Marans, I'd be happy to take him/her off your hands.

And those legbars look good! They're going to be pretty birds.

I went with my kindergartner's class on their field trip today, they went to Cal Ranch in American Fork. The brooders looked so much nicer than the ones at IFA, it was very hard not to pick up a few more chicks! Then I come on here and see all the pictures of the babies. Ack! I have 10 chicks in my basement (we are only keeping 6) and that's enough right? I don't know if it would even be safe to add little babies in with my bigger girls. We've had 8 of the ten for 4 weeks and they were probably up to a week old when we got them...maybe older because I'm no judge. Then the other 2 were freshly delivered when we got them three weeks ago. They don't even use the ecoglow anymore, every time I go down there they have just shoved a ton of wood chips under there. Now I'm trying to convince myself to figure out how to make it work...I need to stop coming by here! Our coop is done we just need to do the run and then the big girls will go outside.

Does anybody know how to tell which hen lays which egg? I'm open to any method besides the trap nest box method...Thank you :)

Can't you put lipstick on their vent or something? Or food coloring? I think I read that on here. Food coloring may be easier to differentiate the colors than lipstick though.

I really have no idea how much or anything but I swear I've read that here. My chicks are still babies so I have no experience with laying hens yet but I have done a lot of reading on BYC.
