Utah!

Lisa, it will be egg pictures.  I have so many that will start laying at different times. I am waiting right now to see who will lay first, my NH, or my Black EE.  I know that EE's are supposed to take longer, but she is sure looking mature. I will have to look that date up.  Boy she has that pretty puffy head along with the nice puffs on the cheeks.  I have no idea what happened there for a while, but those puffy cheeks went away for a while. Crazy, But they are back!  I hope our lavenders get more puffy.  I think they will. Those girls sure are going to be small. Unless..that one of Wendy's is a girl too, which I think both of hers look like girls..but one is bigger.  Guess we'll see when that pretty blue egg comes along..or that funky little first time crow.
Going to put my other BBS eggs in the lock down bator now.  These are Cowgirls.  I can hardly wait to see those.

My bigger lav, the boyish one of course....his poofs are getting pretty puffy again. The girls are coming along slowly. She sure is a sweetheart, I LOVE that girl to the moon and back! I think there is a slight chance my bigger one could be a girl. SLIGHT lol. It has not crowed yet. When that happens the haze of denial will finally lift.....

Last Tuesday I put all of my older chicks out (I had had them for 5 weeks, no idea how old they were when I got them from IFA but they were not day old) and I still had two 4 week old chicks and 1 2 week old chick in the basement. I got really tired of having chicks two places so I went against what you're "supposed" to do and put them all out. I put the ecoglow out in the coop as well for the youngest, but she doesn't go near it. She is much happier in the chicken pile at night. :) I check on her frequently and she has been out there for 4 nights so far and is fine, and all they do is poop on the ecoglow so I took it out today. The chicks (obviously) much prefer being in their bigger coop than being in their brooder. They are so fun to watch, they have a lot of personality. More than I was expecting from chickens. :)

I am thinking on doing the same since our weather..for now, seems to be warming up. I want that room cleaned up that I've had the brooder bin in. After this hatch I will be hatching some Silkies and Showgirls, but I need to find a different place for them to brood. I want that room back. It used to be so cute. I do have a basement. Guess I could put them down there for a while if the weather changes. And, I know what you mean about the chicks loving being outdoors in a larger place. I put my chicks out there with a heat lamp for now. They get so excited once they get past the point of being able to see things around them.

cynthia is your spr being a little pig? silver is always eating, her crop is always full too, its huge! and she is getting so big! she is leghorn size right now. she may just grow to be my biggest girl in the coop and i have a bsl that is 9lbs...

Yes, those rocks are big birds, even the hens. My partridge I had was so big, even my DH made a comment about her. Now, the Pencil is doing the same. I have been letting my girls out to eat. They are loving the grass, the bugs, and what ever else they find. I think they may even be eating the wasps under our back porch, which is fine by us. There for a while they were awful, would swarm us when we came out..now, since I let the girls out, they love being under the porch, and we hardly see any wasps anymore. Go girls!

Also when i introduce new girls they get all crabby and hold eggs in longer than normal.

I love how you put that.

So Lisa, you know the smaller chick I got from you? I was in the garage today with my brother looking at the babies, and I noticed that the little one had a pasty bum! It was the oddest thing to see. I've never actually owned a chick that had a pasty bum. The best I can figure is that maybe it was a little bit of stress from the move on Saturday, or else she ate some of the pine shavings and things got.....sticky...... I cleaned her up tonight and put a little bit of balm on her bum, since it was looking slightly irritated. She was so good about just standing there in my hand while I cleaned her, even though it took a few minutes. And I'm assuming that it helped with the problem, since she um, emptied the tank right in my hand once I'd finished, if you know what I mean. I choose to interpret that as an, "Ahhh, that feels better!" I'll give her another wipe down in the morning, and then probably stick a dob of yogurt in there for them to pick at. I love my sweet little babies

Sphinx - I love it when this thread explodes like that. It's fun to see what all's going on with everyone.

birdman - I totally spaced answering this when you asked earlier, but as of now, I don't know how many eggs are under my broody hen. I wouldn't be surprised if she has a fair number, though. I would bet that she's been laying on and off for the last week or two. Even if she only has two eggs or something, I will be extremely excited to see what comes of it.

Aww poor little one. Maybe the hail storm scared her lol! Glad she is doing good and you are such a good mama to her. I think I am keeping her bigger black sister that looks like her :) I had my last one #8 get a little pasty bum...it seems better now though.. I was worried about that high protein chick feed, I hope it is ok on their little systems! Plus like I told you I worry about that cold incubator, hope it did not freeze their little brains:) Glad you love your (crossing fingers---girls!) They really are a sweet bunch. I am starting to see teensy signs of gender.

That's interesting, because, I had a shell less egg too last week. I know all of my pullets are a bit too young yet to be doing that, so I think it was my new laying hen. Just a lot of egg yolk. I haven't had a light on for quite a while. It just may have been the weather. We never know why those chickens do what they do, but I am pretty sure I've seen weather make them change in their laying habits.
Welcome to our Utah thread!

When my girls ramped up laying I found more shell-less eggs than I've seen before. This was a weird winter. My cuckoo maran also laid an egg the size of a robin's! It's so friggin cute I have to blow that one out. She's my only choc egger and she's 2 yrs old so that was a fun egg to find.

Elk - Yes, I'm worried that there are probably more racoons lurking in the area. I have my suspicions that the one that's been raiding my coop is a big momma coon, which means there are probably babies running around. I thought about trying to discreetly slide a board under my broody at night and carefully move her and the nest into a spare coop that's set up inside a run, but I'm really nervous about breaking her of the broodiness. I feel lucky to have even gotten a hen to set, in the first place. I don't know what I should do

I don't want to lose her or the babies.

I would build something predator proof around her then... but quick. It would be better to lose the eggs (they aren't too far along are they?) then her and the eggs. I've moved a broody hen before and they moved just fine.

BTW, I don't know if anyone remembers...maybe it's in my pics I'll have to look but we took down my nesting boxes (one big attached unit). I was going to put it on KSL for $25 but if anyone here wants it for $10 it's theirs. A couple of the rails in front were plastic pipe and need to be replaced with wood.

We opened up the hay portion of our barn (it's dark) and the girls just love laying in there and it was just one more thing to clean so I don't need it. They don't sleep in the hay at night, they either use the roosts or fly up into the rafters. I can't believe how those big delawares get up there. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they don't get bumblefeet from hard lands but not much I can do about it.

Here are my chicks. I have no idea. what they are or how old they are. They were given to us by a friend.
Little barn yard mixes? Will turn out pretty. Did they tell you if they were girls or boys? Looks like a couple of girls up front. It's always fun to see what colors they turn out to be.

Oh cute!!!! Looks like a BO, 2 GSL maybe--they look just like mine that are a few weeks older. The one in the front--hard to tell in that pic... is it laced at all?
I would guess 4 to 5 ish weeks :)
Thanks for posting pics, they are so fun.....those babies look a little worried about that camera lol :)
