Whats bo? Ya they are a lil scared of people. Ive been trying to get them used to me. So far im not sure its working. Any ideas? Here is individual pics of each. They didnt say if they were boys or girls.

BO=Buff orpington. The second pic looks like one, and very girly....not much doubt on gender on that one. The two that look like Golden Sex Links---at least they are about that same color....could be boys....they have less feathering on their heads and stand a bit more boyish---but at this point it could probably go either way. If they are GSL then they would be girls. If they are boys they would have to be something else. The red one....there are so many reds. I could not say for sure. Maybe a Rhode Island Red or New Hamp? or Red sex link? Others on here would know better on that one. I have not had a lot of red chickens That one looks kinda girlish to me though. If they are barnyard mixes you could have any combination there!

Im hoping for girls too. My 8 year old is also going to be bringing 1 home from school that they have been incubating. Not sure when they are going to hatch.

To warm them up to you, just keep them around people, reach in there and pet them frequently, put your hand in with little treats....they will start to trust you after they see Mr. Hand never hurts them. Try to hold them and talk to them when you have time. They will be sweet if you take the time to do it .

The absolute favorite at my house is mealy worms. They are overpriced tho lol. If you get a little bag of dried ones at the feed store, and just use them a couple at a time to coerce them into liking you it is worth it though. The smaller bag is usually 7.99 at Cal ranch. Treats from your fridge too you can try veggies and fruit.....mine like a few oats in the palm of my hand, those are really inexpensive too----or cormeal---flax seed, any grain really. But the worms make them go crazy.

I would build something predator proof around her then... but quick. It would be better to lose the eggs (they aren't too far along are they?) then her and the eggs. I've moved a broody hen before and they moved just fine.

BTW, I don't know if anyone remembers...maybe it's in my pics I'll have to look but we took down my nesting boxes (one big attached unit). I was going to put it on KSL for $25 but if anyone here wants it for $10 it's theirs. A couple of the rails in front were plastic pipe and need to be replaced with wood.

We opened up the hay portion of our barn (it's dark) and the girls just love laying in there and it was just one more thing to clean so I don't need it. They don't sleep in the hay at night, they either use the roosts or fly up into the rafters. I can't believe how those big delawares get up there. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they don't get bumblefeet from hard lands but not much I can do about it.

Yes, and that may be what we end up doing. I'd be pretty upset at losing either the hen or the babies. Both would just be awful. I am still very tempted to try moving her into that spare coop at night, though. She'd be a lot more protected in that run than any temporary shelter I could erect over her out in the grass. kidasoto - Handling the chicks daily has been working well for me. I've found that if I reach into the brooder slowly and go to the side first, then just kind of stroke the chicks on their back or chest for a second while talking to them, it helps them get used to me and settle down. I like to pick them up individually and just kind of talk to them, like Lisa said. If you have somewhere outside that they can run around for a little bit, they also seem to relax more if you go out there with them. It doesn't even have to be a large area. It seems like some of my older girls (4-6 weeks) will let me pet them more when I have them outside. They get their beaks busy in the dirt and don't care as much about if I'm touching them on their back.

And yep, I'd say that the top right picture you posted looks like a Buff Orpington girl. Cute babies!

She's doing good! She'll need another sponge bath after I get home from work, but she seemed happy and just fine when I checked on her this morning. I put a little bit of yogurt out there for them to investigate. They were curious, but didn't touch it while I was standing there. The larger chick is fairly bold. It's pretty cute, the babies will try to peck my freckles and moles that are on my hands and arms when I'm reaching in there. I'm leaning toward the name Angel for that smaller baby. She is such a sweet little thing. No idea yet on the larger baby, since it could still be a boy or a girl and I can't tell yet. Either way, I'll be happy

phoenix - Cuckoo Marans? At that age, I'd think that there would be more of the barring showing up. I honestly don't know, though
