Red--
Yes, they are very pretty little ones, and just as pretty when they grow up! I'm very fond of this breed, though I really need to stop hatching them before I drown in chicks! Actually, if I can just get that second coop done up in Duchesne, we will have a lot more room to work with. Just need to insulate and set up the watering system, but I'm working so much that I haven't had enough time! We really have to get it done before my next set hatches and the Welsummers arrive.

I'm kind of torn on selling the chicks I have, but it would probably be for the best right now until I get things straightened out coop-wise. Can't say I'd be too heartbroken if they didn't sell, though!

Yep, I hear ya on the whole time thing. And have you noticed that when you do get time, you're missing tools or sick or something? I'm going to be working on the run and coop for my girls in WV tonight and tomorrow. It will be a project, for sure, but I need to make the time and get it done. It will be well worth it for me and them. Good luck on your second coop!

This is a long shot but does anyone have 1 or 2 coop ready chicks they want to sell?  I almost got a Delaware from Sunnybrooke, but I just couldn't risk it coming in and bringing my current flock anything because I've read here that her chicks aren't always in the best conditions.  I don't want to do baby chicks again this year, all of mine are out in the coop and I'm happy to have my space back. :)

I have a splash blue wyandotte looks somewhat frizzled, 4 weeks old--- a splash EE that is 3 months old -- Also 2 wyandotte hens that are 1yr old. Pm me ifyou are interested in any of those....I am in Logan though.

I hear this too! Everytime I start a project I need to go to the store and when I finally get back I am out of time. I get a D- for being organized when I start a project!

Lisa I think Logan is too far for me to get a chicken, I live in Eagle Mountain and my husband would think I was crazy! LOL

Where can I get DE and sweet PDZ locally? I want the sweet PDZ for my roosting boxes and the DE for drying up the poop in the run and for the next time I clean the coop. I figure that you guys are a wealth of knowledge. I prefer somewhere in northern Utah or Salt Lake counties. :)

Okay. I have a question about my new chicks and the heat lamp...

Do i leave the lamp on 24/7? Should i turn it off during the day or at night?

Temps? I am not really sure how old the lil ladies are, just bought them from cal ranch last night, so what temp do i need to keep them at?

I have them in a large tote that has the heat lamp shining on one half of it about 14-16 inches above the chicks.. is that too close?

I have a two month old, or a bit older, RIR that is running with my others. I also have some Exchequer chicks..they are close to three weeks, so they are pretty young. They do mature fast though, and will lay like no other. lol..
I'm in Spanish Fork..

Kimmy, I think I've seen DE at IFA a couple of times, but I can't guarantee that. If you watch the KSL classifieds, I've also seen some ads pop up for it in the Utah county area.

jf, if your girls are still pretty small, you should be able to keep the heat lamp on all the time and have them be okay. That's what I do with the light I have in with my chicks. I have a lid I can put most of the way over my brooder (big plastic tote) but I sometimes leave the lid completely off during the day when it's warmer. I only put the lid on when it's cool at night. You can watch your chicks and see where they tend to cluster in the brooder. If they're always right under the warmest spot of the lamp, then they're cold. If they're as far away from the lamp as they can get, they're too warm. Hope that helps a little. There are others on here that are far more experienced than me, so someone else will probably pop in before long.

Sounds like you are doing great with where the lamp is..don't ever turn it off though. They need heat for a while. They are still pretty young. They will let you know if they are too warm, or too cold. Too hot..they spread out, far from the light. Too cold..they huddle up, and will stand right under the light.
The thing is, even if they are spread out, it is ok if they are just outside of the lighted area. The size of the bulb can be changed to a lower heat source a week at a time. It's according to the size of your brooder too, if it's small, they can heat up pretty quick. May only need a 40 or 60 watt in there at first..but pretty quick, just the 40. Hope that helps. :) Having fun??
