Huge dark egg

Dark egg size compared to the other normal size eggs.
BTW when I was taking these picture my housekeeper who is african wanted to take it home and eat it. Said it looked tasty I told him no not this egg, I asked the breeder if it could be double yolked? she said no that she has one hen that lays those huge eggs.

Ahhhhhhh...... that brown egg is Beauuuuuutifulllllll !!!!

Sun dance - that brown egg is Large! I wonder what it is. Where did you get your lavender eggs from? I was looking at some... But have to make sure of the homes for the ones I have - people have asked me to keep them til they're six weeks.

Pictures! :) First 3 pics is the Blue cuckoo WC

Black cuckoo/splash? polish...Lisa, if this one keeps looking girlie, do you want her? We'll trade you if your Villain comes our way.

Last but not least, my beautiful Clay. He's 7 weeks old now. :)

Got a pm from the gal on the photo contest...guess what the prize is? Ey, I will give you one and only one guess.

The contest ends tonight. I think I may win because of my friends here. And did I say, guess what the prize is? Yep, eggs! 6 olive egger eggs. Now, with only 6 eggs in the bator, I am thinking it wouldn't hurt to put some more Showgirls in the bator, would it? My only bator still up here, and still have three baby showgirls going strong. Candled them this morning. I thought they were all nice sized eggs, one is a pullet..Oooooo, that makes me upset! The little ones will hatch then not grow! I had to let sundance know this morning that her little white one didn't make it. I noticed she wasn't growing. What is up with that? I've had a few of those this year.
I hope red's little one has taken off in growth now. Will probably be a small hen..yep, it has to be a girl!
Ha ha ha :) That's fun! I'm super sorry that the little white showgirl didn't make it. :( Speaking of Sundancen...I love that big, dark brown egg! Love that speckled one as well.

Question for you all: Are you supposed to trim toenails on your chickens? I noticed my orp I took to Joybells had loooong claws yesterday. I never noticed that they get longer as they get older, I figured they would keep them worn down with all that scratching.

I haven't had to trim the nails on any of mine yet, but they haven't gotten long enough to where I'm worried, either. If I see any that do get long talons, I'd probably file them down.

The blue looks cuckoo more than ever, though...but no matter how much we handle her, she isn't what I'd call friendly. She acts like we're going to kill her every time we hold her. Brat.

You know, I've honestly wondered if there's something about blue chickens that makes them jumpier than other colors. No all of them, obviously, since my blue Wyandotte cockerel is about as calm as can be. But both my blue Ameraucana and blue/tan EE are pretty jumpy and do not like to be handled. And that blue splash that Blu now has was quite the drama queen while she was here.

I'm a little worried about Lola, I haven't seen her show any interest in her water. The other two were really eager to drink as soon as possible. I don't know if she's drinking anything when I'm not watching, but she seems to be acting fine, she's very active running and pecking at things and eating grasshoppers so maybe I'm just over reacting.

Does anyone know how to tell if a chicken is dehydrated? I wish I knew what I could do to get her to drink something...

Yep, what Lisa said. Just keep dipping her beak in the water. She's get fussy about it sometimes, but if she's really thirsty, she will take a drink. I dip mine and then tip them upright for a few seconds so that they can swallow, then repeat.

Lisa, were you the one that was saying Lola was attached to your son? I'm sorry, my brain is broken. It's been a really long week. I've noticed with those Delawares that they seem to become strongly attached to a buddy, at least, mine did. When I first got her from Hector, she cried aaaalllllll the way home because she missed her sister. After a few days, though, she became attached to the EE that she was in with, and they were pretty inseparable after that.

Poor Cynthia. You just can't get away from the hatching egg syndrome, can you? Even when you try to quit, there are people going, "Psst! Cynthia ..... Cynthia! Here, take some eggs. You know you want them."

I'll have to get a picture of my Leghorn EE to compare to Dalooras's chicks. I finally named mine. Chuck Norris

(Hmm, 'Chick' Norris??)

What a handsome boy! Are you guys planning to keep him?

Sundance, I hope you have a great time! Get feeling better, okay?

Here's what we are getting now, from a fire out south of us.

Taken in the front part of the house

The side of our house

We would have blue sky, but not today with all the smoke ~ back of house again

Took a shot of up above, in the back again..I'm sure a lot of you up north can relate to these pictures!

Cynthia, yucky! Those are cool shots, but I'm sure they don't feel too great for you guys. I'm hoping some rain comes through soon to help tame those fires. It's been a dry year.

Oh, guess what! I keep forgetting to mention two things. One, my mom's BSL was acting kind of funny with the shavings in the coop yesterday. Her comb has a lot of dark pigment to it, so it's hard to tell how pink she's getting. I think she might be looking for a place to start laying in the near future, yay! I'm going to build a nest box tomorrow and stick it out there for her to explore.

And, my Marans seems to be done with being broody, at least for now. She seems to be healing well with her leg, and in the past three days, she's laid two eggs - though one was a fart egg
tongue.png
I'll get a picture. It's pretty funny. I figured out why her eggs are so light for a Marans, I think. Looking at how pink the normal eggs are and how brown the fart egg is, I think it's just that her 'paint sprayers' are stingy, so the color gets stretched over a normal egg, haha.

OHMYGOSH! I'm at least 200 posts behind and totally in love with the Blue cuckoo WC above, WTG!

My friend won the Meyers contest for polish chicks so I'm a tad green with envy. Lots of new ppl here but a few may remember me (and if I don't respond I am so sorry but this thread is moving at warp speed!).

I hope & pray all in smoke & fire path are ok... I'm getting the smoke headaches here so I can just imagine those closer. And the heat...I know I'm cooler but just watched our horse play in the mister (set out for chickens). Pretty funny -- 1200# horse just trying to drink & rub her face in the mister!

All is ok in our household. We have lost 5 girls (one my only silkie sweet hen...and 2 roos (BillyBob and BillyRay & 2 layers) to fox and hawks. The foxes are hard to be mad (so cute w/their babies) and I know they got the free-ranging roos, but the hawks got all girls mid-day. The mama fox brings her 2 babies to play by our coop every night at 8pm and it took me some time to figure out they are after the mice & chipmunks. In fact, we have hardly of either this year and usually we are swarmed!

We let a couple broody's set and got 3 babies from BillyBob (RIP) and 1 baby from the black silkie from the young chicken owner on BYC in UT (your roo is still safe btw!). Since loosing so many during the day, even with a guard dog tied nearby, all our girls do not get to free range until we figure out something safe (like a bazillion tractors).

Just today I found the silkie's first baby -- a tiny grey muffed EE with fluffy feet! She/he joined Mama (my near true Aruacana(sp?) banty and her only Americana baby (her first two babies she tried to hurt but has been a great mama to since then). She has accepted the new baby so far. (We did try to put the original mom w/eggs in a chick-safe coop but she immediately went nonbroody). I'd get a pic but the girls are all on edge with us visiting the babies and the foxes hanging around every night.

It's been intersting learning about chick development under broody hens.... sometimes the moms let the eggs go cold and I have candled and if we don't see movement (and close to hatch) we help "hatch". All but 2 were DOA.
sad.png
What has been interesting is that even tho we marked eggs and put them under the broody at same time, many have been in different stages of development, even at the time of planned hatching. We had a twin chick whose "womb-mate" had died much earlier but he/she was alive but didn't make it. We are also surprised that we did get two chicks that we know there eggs got very cold! Mother nature is certainly interesting.

It's sorta easier having a mom do all the work but I can honestly say that picking up a peeping package at the Post Office is just like Christmas! We can certainly tell that the chicks that do make it do not have the stress that shipped chicks arrive with!

I'll try to post some pics...but apologize if I get a bazillion posts behind our very active Utah thread!

Gl and keep safe all~

Its a black copper Maran egg. She sent it as a bonus when I bought the olice eggs. I bought the Auracanas off ebay. I am sooo in love with that breed. I have 2 from Cynthia and just hatched the other three that I got from Ray and Debbie. Then I saw these on ebay and they were a different color than what I have so I decided to give then a try. My daughter just left she picked up the chicks. I told her she had to check them for pasty butt and make sure they walk ok. She said what do I do if they get sick, who do I call. I looked at her with a straight face and said ghost busters, I thought she would die laughing. So I gave her the vets phone number. said take them to the vet. She said for a chick and I said yes for these chicks. I guess i am set.
