Utah!

Jealous of you guys getting eggs.

My oldest duck turned 5 months old this week and unless she is laying them in the pasture after she gets turned out at 9am, I am still waiting for my 1st egg.
Ours are 5 months too. They could start coming soon! This is sooner than we thought they would be. We figured out tonight that those two were from one of our rhode island reds.

Congrats on your first eggs! It's always so exciting!!! RIR seem like they lay a bit earlier.

My chickens that I hatched the first week of January just started laying about two weeks ago, so they were nearly 6 months old. My February chickens don't look very ready.

I went to that Farmer's Market in South Weber tonight. It's very, very small right now, but I see great potential. There was a booth selling Indian jewelry and fry bread, a booth selling raw honey, eggs, and yarn, a booth selling veggies, another selling fruit, one selling bread, one selling soap, and another fruit/veggie booth. I took my younger two and we had a marvelous time. While there, I got to visit my lavender ameraucana rooster that I sold to Suzie. Cynthia, he was the boy that you hatched. He was looking bigger (though not full sized) and his comb was red red red. Wouldn't you know it, he came running right up to me when he saw me! I was all flattered and thought he remembered me, but then Suzie admitted that he's super friendly and runs up to everyone.

Wendy, so the pullets are onery, and the roo is friendly. At least they got a nice roo!

Brad, the color of that egg looks like the one that my SS gave me the other day..and I know it was hers.
I have decided to let my friend in Payson take my Pencil. She is so big, and pretty onery to all of the ones I introduce, even picked on a couple today really bad. You know how I feel about that. She started getting pretty bossy a while back, she doesn't just jump at them though, she picks hard..like the lavender did here, only she is big! I will get to see her when I go over there. So that will be good, just hope she doesn't get mean there. She will have a lot larger lot to be one too..so maybe she will be a good girl there. I was looking forward to an egg soon, because she is pretty red, small comb like you said, but after what she did today, and me having been thinking about her, just made up my mind. Little..I mean big stink! Beautiful feathering, but she has no tail? Does your pencil have a tail? She's really different.

Welcome back Sundance. You got back after a nice rain storm to put out the fires. Plus, you weren't home to experience other smoke, firework smoke. Sorry you are having problems with that asthma. No fun. I've been coughing today..getting over a summer cold.
But, I made it to my voice appt. for my MTD. I have a type of dysphonia now after having had that surgery. The gal says the therapy should help a lot.
Well, hope everyone had a great 4th. Some are still having fun..Lisa! :)

Cynthia, the lavender pullets are fine here- yours is a tiny bit skittish, but she really warmed up to me after I held her that first day she was freaking out. Of course, they are two of the smaller birds in that pen, so that probably keeps them in line a little. Plus, I had an awful bully in there for a while. She's gone now.

Hahaha Sphinx, that lavender boy sounds cute. And that FM sounds excellent

brocknash, congrats on the eggs! Woohoo!

Okay, now I must speak of something which has been weighing heavily on my mind for some time. Gather round, friends, and I shall tell you of my fears over my Welsummer..................actually being a RIR!

Okay, okay, drama aside, I really am concerned (and have been for some time now) that my Wellie was a mislabeled RIR at the feed store. Which stinks, if it's true, because she was a whole dollar more than the other chicks! Sheesh

I just Googled some pictures of Welsummer hens, and then RIR hens to compare. Then I looked up pictures of the chicks of both breeds. Yep, I'm about 70% sure right now that I actually got a RIR

Cynthia, the Welsummer chick I got from you looks strikingly different from my supposed 'Welsummer'.

I'm putting up a few pictures so that anyone who wants to can weigh in. I'd love to have some other opinions, at this point. She's been such an awesome chicken, and while I'd be disappointed not to have a dark egg layer, I still love my prissy girl.

Here are some pics of her:

Baby on the far left.

Teenager -

I thought I had a recent picture of her as more of an adult, but I can't find it now. I guess I'll have to take one tomorrow. I always kind of figured that the gold color would come in on the back of her neck when she was older, but........no such luck.

Brocknash.. congrats on the egg!!

Red-- That chick looks like the RIR's I've seen as chicks... dang... that's frustrating!! I should post a pic of my mom's... but if you post one of her now I could tell you if she looks like the one at my mom's... I also had them when I was younger...

Here's my little olive egg from the naughty EE... ( who was supposed to lay a blue egg=)

For reference... L-R: BO egg, pullet egg, my other OE's egg... ( I say that tongue in cheek because it's a really nice olive egg.. I can't be THAT disappointed!!)

This is the color I want my Olive Eggers to lay!! I am getting some next week, the ones that I won. I hope they are this color! Love it!

Wendy, I'm glad that lavender settled down. She was fiesty here. She would give the stink eye at one of the others, then attack! This Pencil will just go for them. Forget the stink eye first. Maybe she can be put into her place,..this friend has the Delaware I had for a while, and she was boss while here. Not bad, just the boss. I didn't keep her because I have been waiting on my pullets...and I still have plenty to wait on. I have a couple of little cockerels I need to place, a Welsummer, and a Golden Sex link color..is a sex link..got it from Cal Ranch, didn't hatch it..from a pullet bin. yep.

Yeah, hate to say it Red, but that's definitely a RIR. I'm sorry. :( My GLW had a few RIR sneak in there, remember?

delarooshens, that olive egg really is quite lovely. Frankly, I think it's prettier than some of the blue eggs that are so pale that they have to be seen in just the right light to know they're blue and not white.
