Utah!

So I love all the offers coming my way from you Sundance, you are so sweet

You are a naughty chicken friend for an admitted chickaholic. I need to run the other way when i see you coming

I really need to deal with my current flock and have sworn not to take on any more. It would happen, I would get a girl, then need another girl when this polish is a boy.. it will never end. This little polish, if it is a girl, will have to just get along haha. She/he is going to be TINY, lots smaller than the bantam polish from Noseychickens. (Frizzled Zorro/masked villian that Sasha had for a bit) . It is a sweet little thing, whatever gender. I will keep hoping a bit longer.
Its like having enough gravy to go with your mashed potatoes, always tricky.

Cynthia - Your babies are precious!

Will a hen mount another hen? And I am afraid you ladies are right. Red do you want another rooster to replace the one that was lost
Yes they will, especially if there is no rooster.
Okay my neighbor traded chickens tonight, but I'm wondering if this really is a girl? Sorry for the blurry cell phone pics.

Beautiful bird but I have concerns about gender...I posted on the gender board as well but I thought I'd cross post here just in case. :)
How old is this one? If it isn't crowing I would wait...I had a SLW that I was sure was a rooster until it started laying. It was very red for a long time.
Blujems, glad you like your new Marans baby. I am so dang excited I cannot wait for these guys to start laying. I hope your trio makes it through winter and there are some good fertile eggs for more babies! Good job on the Cuckoo's, glad they are kicking it into gear! What kind of brown are you getting? I missed seeing you today too. Will get out there again soon

I gotta get my goat fix lol!
I need to get pics up...so excited for them to lay in the box and hard shells at that. I will get some pics up they are brown but not as dark as I had hoped...Maybe I should give them some coffee grounds. someone on FB said they were told that would darken the eggs? LOL

On other news the splash and cuckoo Maran rooster need to go...The Maran roo is just really flighty and doesn't seem to want to stay with the rest and is just a pain. The splash ameraucana is being mean and going after everyone in the little pen. It just doesn't fit in anywhere I have tried. It is not crowing yet, but I am almost positive it is a roo.....If no one wants either I will have to make dinner with them.

Last night my neighbor came over. I thought she was going to complain about the chickens. Nope she wanted to borrow some chickens. Seems she has a slug problem and does not want to use poison, She said she had seen my chicken consuming the slugs. This morning I caught three hens and lifted them over the fence to do their bug duty. I hope I can talk her into having a few chickens, I know she loves the eggs I give her.

I have read that the cuckoo are not as dark as the FBCM......also the breeder of our FBCM's said the eggs get darker as the birds get older. And after breaks they will be darker. Too bad about your roos, glad the BW is ok, hopefully the FBCM will be sweet :) He sure was a little cutie.

Hey you have kittens....you should post pics :) What color?

Good morning, all. Hope everyone is getting rain these days. I know I'm enjoying the change in the weather pattern here!

I'm surprised to read all the posts about hatching. Do you guys hatch chickens all year round? How many birds do you each have? Do you keep them for life or are you regularly selling/swapping them around? Do you guys see your chickens as pets or dinner?

Just curious....

Iain, you pretty much guessed it, somebody (several) is always hatching, somebody (several) is always swapping haha :)
I myself do not eat my own. But I am not opposed to someone ELSE eating/humanely processing mine if it needed to be culled out of my flock for some reason. Mine are for pets and eggs only. I will keep nice girls so long as I am getting eggs and they behave decently within my flock. I will rehome/swap/give for food a girl that is mean spirited though or is not laying very well. Feed costs so much I won't keep one that is a bum layer....unless they are one of my ornamentals or treasured babies. I kind of have two groups. One group that I adore and will keep because they have lots of pet factor, and one group for laying that I would trade out if need be. :p

Sitting here putting tea bags on both arms...just got attacked by wasps.
I have lots of colors...The batch that is old enough to leave....there is 2 gray, 1 black and a couple of striped ones....some are ok, some are not friendly.
I have a batch that is about 2-3 weeks old....one orange and the rest seem to be calico. I can tell ya they are super good mousers, Mom has been taking them out and teaching them to hunt....Moms are both calico and I am pretty sure the dad is the orange boy that comes around.

The FCBM Roo seems really sweet and the BW is a good rooster...gets better every day....He is starting to act like the king and is getting everyone put in there place. The 2 big girls needed a roo to tell them what to do. LOL

Sundance, congrats on so many good eggs! How many did you start with?

Kimmy, what a conundrum! Where could the eggs be coming from? When was your blrw hatched? As you know, I hatched blrw chicks on 2/6. My next door neighbor has one cockerel and I kept the lone pullet. They look very different. Your bird lOoks more like a cockerel but not exactly. I'll post links to both (stupid phone won't let me post pictures) so you can compare. Both are 5.5 months old.

Oh my! I may have to come visit and see these babies. Love kittens. I have been looking for a new baby. But I cannot find just the right one. Cats live so long, I have to find the one that just clicks... My cat is 17, can you believe that? She is a tuxedo cat, black and white....with four white paws...and on her back foot there is one black toe. Awww. She has been the best cat ever, she is so sweet. Will be sad when her time comes....she has arthritis and I can tell she hurts sometimes the way she jumps and walks. Not bad, but a little. She has survived lots and lots of preschool kids over her 17 yrs.

Hope those wasps got their butts handed to them lol. Did you spray them?
