Utah!

The mites we are seeing mostly here in Utah are the orange/brown color. Yes, check the vent first. Just separate her feathers between the tail and fluff part of her bum. If she has a lot, you will see them squirming around. All in a bunch if she has a lot. Not so much under the wings, in fact, I never have seen any under the wings when mine have been covered around the vent. Chest yes. Sides of tail yes. You have fun tomorrow checking that poor girl out, then let us know how it went. Let's hope it's an easy fix. You don't have to get the bacon grease out. Just the wesson oil or whatever you have. :)

I know I should've hoped to find creepy crawlies- that is a much easier fix. But, she's as clean as a whistle. No leg mites, no mites anywhere on her body.

After molesting her, I gave her some vitamins, just in case it's a vitamin deficiency.

Oh Shinx..sorry you don't know what's going on here. I hope you find the answer..and no more sick chickens..!

I came on to say how excited we are about going to the Temple with our son! He is going to get his own Endowments today. He's getting closer and closer to that date..Oct. 24th. Oh man, in a few more days, I will be saying...next month, he is leaving. We are all excited for him. Will say again, glad that he is staying in the States. :))

Cynthia, congrats to your son. Which temple are you guys going to? I hope you have a lovely day. I think it is a little less nerve wracking when they stay stateside.

Just did my last candling of my eggs this morning. All five are wriggling and happy. It's funny to me- two of the brown eggs were refrigerated for at least 24 hours, but it didn't seem to have any affect on their fertility.

Sphinx--the very first eggs I hatched I had put in the fridge for a week before I knew not to do it, and they all hatched....those were the nearly deads that also came unplugged and went down to 67 degrees. Maybe it does not matter so much?

Glad no mites, but sorry you can't figure this out. Maybe just a coincidence....what about fertilizer....have you weed/feed 'ed youryard lately? Brainstorming still here...Also so glad your babies are coming along nicely! You guys have got me so hung up on mites I dreamed about them last night, I HATE bugs. All my girls got a bum search last night, looks good, but I feel like there are critters lurking everywhere now lol. I am scratching as I sit here typing just at the thought!

Cynthia, congrats on your son accomplishing what he desires! That is awesome. I can see how proud you are of him :)

Red, ever find those missing girls? And any eggs YET!!!? You are probably going to find a big pile of them somewhere.

I went out to three broken eggs this morning :(

Aw Lisa, I'm sorry. Nope, no eggs yet. And no sign of the missing girls. I am thinking the neighbors either scattered them, or their pitbull got them and they just won't say. But from the sound of things, my GLW, who's the lone surviving girl out there, may have started laying. We think she's hiding eggs from my BF in the yard. Arg, it's so frustrating not being able to get out there and watch everything!

Sphinx, keep at it. A solution has to turn up at some point! I wish I could help somehow.

So we got a lot of peaches off of our trees this year, and most of yesterday was devoted to harvesting and using them. My mom and I put up some bottled peaches, and I made a couple of batches of jam. It's so yummy on toast. I tend to throw in some extra spices right before I bottle, like cinnamon.

Anyway, the turkeys "helped" us to harvest:

Little boogers. They go rabid on those peaches. And what they don't eat, the chickens clean up. It's kind of funny to see everyone running around with peach beards.

Nope, we only do the weed and feed twice a year, and the last time was back in March or so. The Partridge is already dead- she went very, very quickly. Just found her a couple minutes ago. I'm taking her up to Logan as soon as I can get myself some lunch.

Red, love the peaches. My tree is so tiny, but it probably gave me 15 lbs of peaches, even after thinning. Then I had two other friends bring peaches to me in trade for pears. As a side note, anyone want pears? I was going to slice and freeze peaches today, but instead, I guess I'll take a chicken corpse for a ride.

Lisa, I kinda hate bugs too, so I was really apprehensive to check. ICK!

Ack! Sphinx, I'm so very sorry to hear that you lost the partridge. I sure as heck hope you can get her tested and see what in the world is plaguing your birds. That's just weird.

And on an unrelated note, my uncle caught a juvenile turkey in his back yard yesterday. He showed me the video, and it's a very pretty male, by the looks of it. My uncle thinks it's a Rio Grande, and he's giving it to me after he shows his grandkids - assuming the turkey doesn't fly out the dog run first

How cool!

That is so cool, Red!!!

I know this is going to sound awful, but I wasn't as emotionally attached to the partridge. Maybe because I didn't hatch and raise her? I'm more concerned about becoming a chicken leper soon. That it IS mareks, and I'll end up losing a bunch of my flock.
