Utah!

i live in Lehi and my coop is predator proof, but during the day my chickens have the the whole yard to run. i do have crow, hawk, and falcon problems but they don't go after the large hens.i did have a falcon go after some chicks that was only a couple months old but they got away because of the bushes that are in the run. (my run is just a 4' fence of 2"x3" wire you can get at home depot. no top). what you need to watch for is red fox. we have a lot around here but not were i live but i have seen them in other areas. dogs and cats are the #1 menace in city neighbor hoods.

Lehi, yaay we are close. I'm in Spanish Fork. I see hawks around here too. Cats! That would be a big problem here.

They're so cute! My sister wants a silkie in the worst way, and am going to try and find her one. Haven't quite figured out how you go about finding a single chicken!

I have a lot of Silkie eggs in my bator right now. Will hatch next week,, if you don't mind getting babies. :)

Lisa, I have to say, that egg is exactly what I am looking forward to from my Welsummer. I love those birds! I know yours isn't, but that sure looks like a Wellie egg. Very pretty!

Cynthia,

Thanks again for the Denagard suggestion. It arrived and I gave all birds a 5 day dose and within two days the bird with symptoms was much, much better. That is an amazing remedy.

So I called my pet chicken and they promise me that she is a true Amereucana. They said that the babies can have pink feet but will change as they grow. So I guess only time will tell but they garinteed me so I hope she really is!!
What if I'm getting her mixed up with my blue Orpington? The blue Orpington has really dark feet and legs.....what do you think?
Cynthia I might want one of your silkie babies!! Especially if you get a blue one;)

but anyway i am not a fan so much of normal chicken wire but i am too poor to do the whole run in hardware cloth. what i do is go to lowes and with the stucco stuff normally on the end wall past the wood and all that they have huge rolls of chicken wire, like 3 foot by 100 foot or even 150 foot, they have normal chicken wire and for a little more they have this super thick stuff that also has a little bit bigger holes, this is what i get and its so much cheaper than buying it by the little rolls! i got the thicker stuff and payed maybe $70 for 150 feet of the thicker stuff but that is the biggest roll of the thicker stuff, they also have the normal stuff and the thicker stuff in 100 foot rolls for cheaper. its very high quality stuff and so strong too! and like i said its so much cheaper in the long run over buying small rolls. i used my air stapler and tacked it on with 1 inch staples and it has worked great. the predators we have in this area of west jordan are mainly the household kind like dogs etc. we also do get skunks here and i know cougars do come into neighborhoods, like the neighborhood just east of copperhills high school has had two in the last 14 years or so. and i have seen a lot of foxes too, if you look around sections of bangerter highway at night you will often see them. also we get tons of hawks. i have a covered run because of the hawks and also to keep the girls in lol

I hope I get a decent hatch. They have been hard to hatch this year. These are supposed to be blues, splash, or paint. I want a paint really bad, well, I want a partridge really bad, but don't think that is going to happen this year. :/

On the Ameraucanas..they are born with dark feet. Not pink. It seems like the dark Orpingtons are too. I am finding out, that hatcheries don't always get it right. You will love what you have.. :)) Did you post a picture? If they are wrong, let them know, they will reimburse you. I am actually giving some bantams some time to see if they are what I ordered. I am pretty sure they aren't. So, will post another picture out to Ideal, and they will reimburse me when they see this little one.

Going back to bed..colds. Ugh, no fun. This one is really a bad one. Austin and Scott are still getting over theirs. I'm just at the start. Oh well, maybe I won't get sick this winter? Wishful thinking. My immune system isn't the greatest, taking a couple of different immune boosters. Time. Always takes time to get over a cold. I am telling you all right now, don't catch a cold this winter, ya hear!

I lucked out Brad...year before last, there was a yard sale down the street from us. I eyed some chicken wire. It was a huge big tight bundle, never opened or used. I got it for 5 bucks! We have used it several times, and, also, we use the staple gun to wire chicken wire on.
Stay well..!
