Utah!

oh, such cute chickies, Cynthia!! I definitely need some of those with my egg-layers, some day=) Cinammon Sussex?? that souns really pretty, too!!

Thank you for the compliments on my babies you guys..they are all sold!

Dalloras, you would really like the Welsummer in your flock. Picture on the net just don't do them justice. They not only have that pretty pattern around their neck, the orange/yellow necklace, but the body has a very unique pattern..on the back area. Just beautiful. The eggs aren't only pretty, but nice size, and I remember when I had a girl, she was laying around 5 a week. I am thinking, you can find them at feed stores at times in the spring. They turn out pretty nice.
Let's see if I still have a picture of my girl I had..I think I keep the ones that I thought were pretty. :)

Here is one of the ones I had last year.

Oh wow! I clicked on the picture, and they have them get real big now! I may be behind in the times..as usual!

Hey chicken friends...my rooster has started to get aggressive toward my kids. Ironically it is two of the older kids (17 and 13) that he has attacked. The 17 year old was provoking him and frankly, I felt deserved it, but my son was just walking to the car with me. He also went after my two year old's toes for which he was promptly pinned and carried around the yard and then pinned again. Anyhow, these minor incidences (for now) have caused me to start thinking about a free range chicken dinner.

Which leads me to my question, is there a local processor? I don't have the tools for this and I don't know that it is worth the investment for one bird. I am toying with the idea of raising meat birds but for now, it is just a thought. I have never actually killed anything in my life, so I am having a hard time with that part of it. The rest of the process I can see myself doing, if I had the appropriate tools, but I am having a hard time picturing myself actually doing the deed. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Lilwanis, off hand, I don't know of any processing places for chickens. You might check with places that process game birds, or see if you have a friend or neighbor nearby that could help you with the deed. It really doesn't require special tools to do, though. You'll need a good, sharp knife and a large pot that you can fill with hot water for plucking. There are videos on Youtube that show walkthroughs on how to process your own birds. You might also check in the meat birds section of the forum - some very helpful folks there.

Oh my goodness Lisa! I am so glad you asked me. I was thinking they would go into lock down on Tues.! But they are due to hatch on MON.! I just came back from running and getting those babies into lock down..today is lockdown! If I hadn't come on here, I would have just thought Tues. Wonder if they would have hatched..lol.. probably, because it was done wrong! Well, I have been busy with the last two being so close together, that I just remember that Tues was something I guess. Glad I got them in, late, but they are in lockdown now. So, I guess that means they won't hatch until later that night Mon. We'll see Thank you Lisa! These are my Cinnamon Sussex that I am looking forward to. I really was looking forward to the Wellies too..glad I got some of those. I love them.
I haven't been looking at my calender. I have tried not to lately..that Wed. is creeping up closer and faster. Austin isn't any help, only 4 more days mom!
So here is how I have been lately..smiley and happy for him, but on the other hand..a little on the mixed feeling side..

Lilwanis, i have had a few roosters that were aggressive towards my kids also. I found that the best way to break the habit was to have the kids go on defence when the rooster came after them. Never run from the rooster, always run at him and try to grab him even if it is scary. When they become aggressive they are just trying to show that they are the top bird. Be aggressive back. Chase them down and catch them and pick them up. I will only take a few weeks and he shouldn't go on the attack when the kids are around. Top roosters dont like to be held but will tolerate it. Make him understand that he is not the top bird. I have a RIR bantam rooster and a Silkie rooster now and they both went through they attack phase. Me and my 10 year old son broke the RIR but believe it or not it was my 3 year old that broke the Silkie. They Silkie still bits fingers if you grab his hens but will not attack anymore. Both the roosters run from my 3 year old. Maybe you should give him another chance. Good luck!

Thank you Red and MadChicken. I have spent a good portion of today researching knives. I have a pot that would work, but don't have a good knife (mine are mostly Ikea cheapies). He is quite aware that hubby and I are dominant, but I don't know how to get the kids to be dominant to him...Kaia, the two year old, is not afraid of him and I am not sure if that is good or bad, but she does like to give him treats. My next youngest, 8, has no fear either. My husband's kids on the other hand are a bit afraid of everything. I keep wondering if Henry, the rooster, is just young and hormonal, or if he is going to get worse? He is 24 weeks now. My husband has been trying to talk me out of killing him all day...as I don't have a knife yet, it will wait for a while. Hard to think about killing something that has a name and he isn't that bad. I will give it more time and try to get the older kids to toughen up a bit.
