Vacation. What to do?

Leaving for 12 days. 4 hens that free range. I have a run built around their old coop (currently still sleeping in there) my new coop is all ready for the birds to move in.

Option 1. Closing the run up and covering it with cheaper orange temporary fencing. Keep the coop dopr open let them come and go.

Option 2. Lock the birds in the new coop for the 12 days.

Weather here in seattle area is supposed to be mid 40s and up while gone.


Food and water supply will be replenished daily.
Just dont have anyone to come lock them up and let them out everyday

Does the new coop have an attached run? How big is it?

New coop is 4W x 5L x 5H.. no attached run but i can move the run over before I leave. Just worried they'll try to get to their current coop to roost. If i let them out of the new coop
Thought it'd be a good time to introduce them to the new coop lock them in so they know its home.

Truthfully, you know the old run/coop, they know the old run/coop. I would leave them there until you come back. Thing is, sometimes there is a problem with a new set up, that you didn't see in the planning. Be better if you were there. Plus pretty tight quarters to be locked into. I would wait.

Agreed. It could work if the attached run had a cover on it so they couldn't fly out, but it's better to leave them where they're familiar if they're going to be locked in for a while.
