I have read alot about using medicated feeds, and have found no posts regarding those chicks that have been vacinated. .I have an order coming from McMurrays next week and ordered them vaccinated against Marecks and Coccidiosis (sp?). If I feed medicated feed is it true the vaccines are negated?

Thanks...

I think you'll be fine using non-medicated feed. On another thread someone posted that the hatchery said "Using a medicated feed will nullify the coccidiosis vaccine. It will not hurt the birds, but it is just a waste of money to vaccinate."

Medicated starter contains a Thiamin blocker called Amprolium. That is it. It blocks the uptake of Thiamin by the coccidia, thus rendering them weak and unable to mature in the gut. They remain in this state allowing the bird's body to develop enough to be impervious.

This will have no effect on the vaccination, and if the vaccination didn't cover a particular strain and your chick was exposed, it would give it a good fighting chance. There are 9+ strains, IIRC, and I doubt the vaccine covers all of them.

It's not as though the medicated feed costs more...and I hardly think it's a waste of money to vaccinate- what's wrong with covering your bases?

My chicks from McMurrary were also vaccinated too, they told me not to use medicated feed, so I haven't.? They haven't been out side yet so hopefully that won't be a problem.
