Anyone have any thoughts or opinions on vaccinating chicks. I have a few that are a couple days old and was curious about the different types of vaccines that are out there. I have found a mycoplasma bacterin vaccine, infectious laryngotracheitis, fowl pox, coccida, mareks, and a few others. Any thoughts???

It's too late for Marek's vaccine to be effective, even if you have it. Other vaccines are used depending on circumstance; if you are taking birds to shows, or buying birds at shows, some other vaccines can be used. In the face of a local outbreak some vaccines are recommended also. Mary

Your current chicks are too old for Coccidiosis and Mareks vaccinations. Here is just a partial list of other vaccines: Newcastle, Fowl Pox, Avian Encephalomyelitis, Coryza, Laryngotracheitis, Coryza, and Mycoplasma Gallisepticum. Coccidiosis and Mareks do have, but other diseases also have multiple strains or verities so more than one vaccine is needed to protect against that one illness. Also make sure that the vaccine or vaccines that you do buy is formulated to fight the germ strain prevalent in your area. Fowl Pox is perhaps the most difficult vaccine to administer, but it gives almost complete life long protection against Fowl Pox.

Because you didn't post your location I am unable to advise you about whether you should vaccinate for the pox because pox in chickens is spread by mosquitos.

Good luck.

I live in east texas, and we have numerous mosquitos
