The issue of buying vaccinated versus non vaccinated chicks from the feed store came up in another thread, and it got me to thinking......

I have 24 eggs in the incubator that will be hatching around the 6th of March. And as such, I have a lot of questions about vaccinating.

1) Is the vaccine for Marek's something that I can order online? If so, where? Does anyone know of a good online resource for these kinds of things?

2) What diseases can be vaccinated for?

3) When does one administer a vaccine?

4) HOW does one administer a vaccine?

5) Is there any way to find out if Marek's Disease is a problem where I live?

As the time draws nearer to my hatch date, I'm sure I'll have even more vaccination questions. (2 more weeks to go!!!

) But any information any of you is willing to impart to this first time hatcher now would be greatly appreciated!! I keep looking in the Learning center, but all I pretty much come up with is that the diseases are out there, and that some of them have vaccinations available for them, but nothing about how or even IF a home hatcher can do this themselves. Am I looking at a HUGE vet bill in the very near future?

To all of you experienced hatchers, please, PLEASE chime in on this one. Every bit of knowledge, no matter how obvious it may seem to you, may be critically important to me and other first timers. Thanks in advance for any and all help and advice you folks can offer me. I

Forgive me I'm not very versed in the topic of vaccination, but as far as a place you can get the vaccines goes take a look at twincitypoultrysupplies.com

They have a lot of poultry supplies, ect..

Yes you can buy it online at many online stores. I wrote down the cheapest and will get back to you on that, it's downstairs. You have to use the vaccine within one hour of opening it and it vaccinates 1000 chicks. Now you can buy waffers and you can cut it and store the rest in the fridge. I'm going in with a friend and we will each get half of it. Still waste some but it's worth it. Yes, the disease is everywhere it seems and once you have it, you have it. it's in the soil and it's transferred by the dander on the chickens feathers and the dust the chickens kick up. Once your bird has it, he will always be a carrier I have read too. What you do is give your bird a shot in the back of the neck just under the skin. It will be my first year doing it and it scares me LOL They supposedly can act really crazy for a bit after administering it. Good luck and I will get the website where I found it to be the cheapest in a bit.

Thank you so very VERY much Hangin'!! I just knew I could count on the wonderful folks here at BYC. Our local veterinarian is less than useless when it comes to chickens and any other forms of barnyard fowl. If it doesn't walk on 4 legs and have fur, he can't be bothered!

I'll go check this link out right now. Maybe I can get everyone in the neighborhood to sign up and we can split the cost. We have no where near 1000 birds collectively, but I'm pretty sure that everyone would want to vaccinate what birds they do have.

Thanks again Hangin! You're a gem!

I'm interested to see the more experienced member's responses as well, I'm hatching around the same time you are and will be vaccinating against Marek's for the first time.
