Valentine's Day Hatch

Well, I already have more than the 42 eggs my turner will hold. I'm not expecting as good of a hatch rate as last time, because I'm experimenting. So far I have the eggs I've saved from my EE & campines (a second one started to lay), that was 19 eggs and I expect to get up to 3 more tomorrow before the set.

Then tonight I made a trip to Trader Joe's, although I'm not positive about the pack date, they were only stamped with a sell by date (Feb 18th).

Standard old white eggs.

But I was very excited when I went to my local health food store. They had lots of local eggs, none marked fertile, but all marked free range. So I'm hoping the locals have a rooster or two. These eggs were packed yesterday. They had some lovely olive eggs, but they had no pack date. They also were selling duck eggs, I might have to go back and try some of them too. Anyway, I was so excited when I looked in this carton. I think the employees were getting suspicious. I stood at the cooler so long, so I could look at every carton, there was such a variety of eggs. Three of these are SUPER dark!

And lastly, I'm leaving on vacation on Saturday, an 11 hour drive to the Oregon coast. I'll be gone a week. I found this on the GQF website, made specifically for the Genesis 1588. I am so ready for this hatch!

I'll post a final set picture and count. I'm thinking maybe I shouldn't stack extra eggs since the incubator will be in the back seat of my car

Now, to get a decent hatch

Best of luck with your hatch and travels. Since you said earlier that you were not going to have the turner going while traveling, what about just putting the eggs in egg cartons while you are driving and then put them in the turner while you are in Oregon? That way you should be able to stack the eggs while in the turner but they should fit in the incubator safely while traveling?

Guess Im joining too........eggs arrived last week, but I cant put them in until my other order gets here tomoro, like Featherz said, I won't be able to let them settle much....now that I think about it, maybe I'l just let them settle and put the eggs in a day late, after all.....chicks usually start hatching before day 21 anyways like around day 19 or so, so they should be able to hatch alongside everyone elses hatches here

Oh dang! I hadn't thought of that. I was hoping if I had a few extras I would have replacements for some that aren't developing at the first candling (got to remember to pack the flashlight). You are an instigator! I was going to cut back my numbers by leaving out a few of the TJ eggs, some of them are really porous and some have lots of little calcium bumps. I tried to pick the most normal looking dozen that had the best date. I certainly won't be able to candle the (I'm assuming) marans eggs. I can't see through them at all. BCM are very popular around here, so I'm guessing that was the hen for those three.

Okay, I'll put my final count on the spreadsheet tomorrow.

Eep! I should be setting today and I've been slack and haven't shifted a broody yet. Hmm... it's 7pm, I might have to just round up some eggs and pop them in the 'bator to start cooking and try shifting someone later or tomorrow. :) It's still daylight here and will be for a while so I think the 'bator is the best bet at this point.

The January Egg Swap will be setting eggs for Valentine's Day.

Chicken eggs need to be set at 4:00 pm on January 24, Duck and Turkey on January 17, and Cortinex Quail January 27 (I think).

Here is a link to the January Egg Swap.

I would think that the motion from the car would "turn" them just fine!!! I wouldn't even bother turning them. (Isn't the point of turning so that they don't stick?)
I may join this hatch after all, and try out my new tiny incubator with some GLCs.

Keep your fingers crossed that my eggs get here today! I won't be able to set them until thursday if they don't since I work tomorrow and can't go get them.. so my hopes for anything to hatch won't be too high. Eggs would be shipped and at least a week old, but worth a shot anyways. I'll be here in spirit either way. :)

well im not sure if i'm in the hatch or not. i received my shipped eggs from the January swap last Thursday, and i sat them on Friday. which would mean they will hatch on the tenth of February. roughly. probably earlier because I'm running the 'bator at 101. just curious.

I'm kind of in the same boat with some of mine. I had one eBay seller ship too late for my set last week and too early for this one, so I'll have some BRs hatching with you! I'll have to juggle incubators for hatching a bit
