After reading all the wonderful posts on here I put vaseline on my roosters' combs to protect them from frostbite. I rubbed it in as best as I could all then all the hens chased the roosters and pecked at their combs and wattles! They were trying to eat it! What did I miss? Are my hens just that weird? It was INSTANT-I might as well have rubbed mealworms in! Poor guys, I won't do that again, as I am sure I added to their injury. Just wondering if anyone has had the same thing occur. For the record my hens have been fed rendered fat with grains, it's possible that they thought it was just food on the boys faces but uuugh...
