Vegetable Substitute?

1/2 cup lentils soak over night, drain then rinse 2 times a day for a few days, it's also a good lessen for kids to watch seeds grow. The water that is drained off is a great fertilizer for house plants.

Thanks for the idea. I'm trying it right now. My brother gave me a huge bag of lentils when he moved to Pullman WA, home of the National Lentil Festival.

I get lentils and peas for free at athe grain yard. 200 lbs at a time. Most of the grocery markets will not give away produce, but I have dound one eho was jappy to give me greens. In fact he saves warermelon and cantalopes that are too old. he knows the critters love them.

Ducks and chickens both love the Romaine lettuce.

Onde they get first pick of the produce and scratch it around, i then fork it on top of the compost pile before i give them the new boxes.

I raid the trash can at a local farmstand. The lady has actually gotten so she will save tidbits here and there too. I'm getting pigs this year so I may ask her if I can just swap out the whole can from time to time. Worst thing in it is a squishy tomato so no harm done.

Mine can run loose most of the time so I don't get to shook up about it but when I had my guinea pig I was always on the lookout for greens. I would pull over on the road for a stand of clover and dandelions. Knew where the unused hay fields were with alfalfa still growing. Would snag a bag of lawn clippings if I knew the person didn't use chemicals. The guinea pig lived nearly 3x it's normal life span so I did something right. Funny a good stand of greens still catches my eye going down the road. Must miss the pig that wouldn't die more than I thought.

Sue are you going from pig guinea to swine domestica?

I've collected wild greens like pigweed, dandelions, and lamb's quarters for my own table as well as the henyard.

There's alfalfa growing all over this location - totally wild. The highway department must have planted annual rye in a large area near the interstate one year. It volunteered for many more and there's still a little of the stuff - altho' it is being crowded out by the volunteer alfalfa

. I noticed a guy loading up the back of his car with the alfalfa last year. This 1 or 2 acre area has now transitioned into agricultural production - almost

This year, I'll be harvesting a little alfalfa. I even park the pickup on a patch at the end of a road when I work in my smaller gardens. May as well mow a parking area and dry the crop. It will be a natural for a guy who grew up running a 9n and swathers mowing hay fields and bucking bales
