Hi

I am a mostly vegan. There has been a few slip ups with chocolate this week. It is nice to know that there are other vegetarian/vegan members of BYC.

I have been to quite a few farms, too, including UC Davis' dairy farm, and know a number of farmers. Of course it's not the same as owning and operating one, but that doesn't change the fact that I personally disagree with the basis of farms--which is making money off of animal products that often require killing the animal. It is simply a matter of having different values. To me, the life of all vertebrate animals is worth the same. It's an unconventional, unpopular, and controversial stance to take, but that's honestly how I feel. I think the life of a chicken and the life of a person are equal in their value, and therefore killing a chicken has the same weight as killing a human. It's just my own opinion, nothing personal meant against you or other farmers.

And yes, I'm aware that I do benefit from factory farms, as someone who eats dairy. That's something that genuinely saddens and horrifies me, hence the fact that I want to get off of eating dairy from large farms. Otherwise, I eat only eggs from my own chickens, do not eat meat, do not wear leather, and don't use other animal products.

ok I lied. Slappy the squirrel disagrees too.

he thinks that idea is sorta nuts.

I'm sorry, but that was a rather rude response. If you're going to post in this thread, at least please be respectful. You can think it's "nuts" or whatever, but that is my personal opinion. I do not believe in exploiting animals, it's simply against my morals. If you find issue with this and don't want to be understanding, you can go to the Meat Birds area or any other thread. This is supposed to be a safe place for vegetarians to talk without being bashed for our opinions.

Also, as a note, I have never once gone into threads on the meat bird section and said anything in there. I would appreciate the same consideration.

Hi! Thanks for coming and posting. It really is nice to know there are other vegetarian/vegan members around! Makes me feel a little less alone.

P.S. Don't let negative comments distract you or get you down. Some people don't realize that they should be polite and not start arguments on threads that are obviously for the purpose of getting to know other like minded individuals and general chit chat and not for a major disscusion of ethics. There are many posts about hunting, guns and processing poultry that I just ignore. It would be nice that others had the same consideration.

I am!

1. How long have you been vegetarian?

about a year now

I decided not to eat meat (and eggs) or anything that comes from an animal (including milk). Well I've never actually liked milk

since little (about 3yrs old) I always puke when they forced me to drink milk

2. Why did you choose to go vegetarian?

Because they treat animals bad!

3. Has raising and caring for poultry changed your opinion of farm animals, or helped affirm your vegetarian lifestyle?

nop! the only good thing I know is that my chickens produce healthier eggs and rich in taste than store bought eggs. But I don't eat the eggs though.

4. What are some of your favorite foods?

Well since im American/Mexican, I like mexican foods better cuz I was raised with mexican foods lol well for the ones that know what these mexican plates are, GREAT! I like Enjitomatas (It's like enchilada's but it's made out of tomatos and a little bit of cheese, Spaghetti! no meatballs! Lentejas which is like a veggie soup

SP, that was Boyd's idea of a joke. He's well.... kinda crusty, in a well meaning way. Besides, anyone can see it's a prarie dog with a bazooka, not a ground squirrel.

I just love carrot juice, especially when the carrots are screaming as they give up their wonderful juice as they are being torn bit by bit by my super turbo powered juicer!

I cry for their poor souls as I am enjoying every last drop!

I eat vegetables even though they have feelings too, just like chickens and humans, but I being human and at the top of the food chain have a choice, and I choose to eat, to consume, to live and reap the rewards the earth has to offer me. I am a savage killer & proud of it!

Carrot juice anyone?

I'm trying to stay level-minded and make sure this thread stays polite and light.

Thanks for joining us!

sadinna, haha, I figured so much, but it did seem a bit on the rude side. And you're correct, clearly a prairie dog! Kind of reminds me of the video so many people call "Dramatic Chipmunk"--but it's so obviously a prairie dog! So silly.

JP33 ... I'm just going to roll my eyes and move on.
