Vegetarian chickens?

There was bad feeding practices that led to mad cow. They used to use downer cows in cattle feed. That causes mad cow and it's fast spread. So they banned the use of meat in cattle feed. It could still be used in chicken feed.

They would use anything that would up the nitrogen (signalling protein content) of cattle feed. Chickens as we know can be messy with feed. So the chicken litter would be dried, ground, and added to cattle feed. So they were still feeding cattle to cattle and causing issues. Then that practice was banned as well.

Chickens and pigs do not get prion diseases. Both species are known to happily cannibalise their own.

I find this reply condescending & want to defend Snoogie's stance.

What distinguishes humans is our ability to make choices & change "nature".

If you really believe what you said above, then you shouldn't believe in getting taking any medication or eating anything other than raw foods since fire & cooking are man-made processes. You also shouldn't be eating meat with hormones or veggies & fruits with fertilizer since these are artificial additives.

We all make choices in life & in what we eat. Also in what we feed the animals we raise & eat. I think you should respect that, even if you don't chose it for yourself because it's not what you believe in.

I give my chickens feed with animal protein. I eat animal protein myself. These are the choices I make. But I want this forum to be a place where vegans & vegetarians can also discuss backyard chickens and not be afraid of having someone jump down their throat.

The real point of this thread is to share our opinions on vegetarian-fed chickens.
I wouldn't buy it myself. I think it's probably a marketing ploy and I question whether it's really healthy for the chickens. But then I've also stopped eating chicken meat since I got my chicks this spring. I just can't trust that any grocery store - even Whole Foods - would be able to get meat birds that were raised as happy as my girls are, and that makes me sad & not want to buy it & eat it.
And I think it's gross when people feed their chickens chicken meat. That's my opinion.
Can you please tell me what it my words was condescending? Or intimidating?
I am talking biology and you starts to talk about choices?
I am talking reality and you start talking about human morality?
Where is the connection here?
Human can choose to starve themselves if they want to that isn't the issue !

Whole Foods Market has a commercial on the radio advertising for chicken breast from chickens on a strict vegetarian diet. Thoughts? Chickens are carnivorous right?
When I heard it on the radio at work it stood out and struck me as odd.
They are decidely omnivores. Free-range with access to quality forage which is not realized as often as we think makes for range of fair consumed. Insect and small animals are they they invest the most effort in to consume. Vegative greens that they clearly cherry-pick represent the bulk of the mass you find in their crop and likely the majority of the energy the operate off of. Seeds, especially those from grasses are readily the consumed. All three types that will look away from when they become too abundant with respect to what they already consume. The feeds we provide them, regardless of how they are characterized, provide way more energy and other nutrients than they would naturally consume. Those nutrients, even the the plant-based only formulations, are coming at them from sources that are not natural because they are almost excursively coming from seeds. The birds and their products (eggs) taste differently as a function of what their diet is.

If you are really sincere in your love for your chickens ability to choose, then provide them actual choices rather than ramming down their throats what you think is best.

The best example to that is the France breed of Bresse ,the best meat chicken in the world, that is mainly free range.

I see one guy has those posted on Craigslist, what do you think the chances are of their authenticity?
Zero!
The real French bresse is kept FANATICLY, (fanaticly as a French cheff can be ! :lau ) in France, there is only a certain of breeders all known and monitored.
I know that in the US was a project that tried to develop somthing like it. Don't know how successful it is.
The French bresse symbolize the Tricolor, the French flag: red comb, white feathers, and blue legs!
