So I saw on here recently a post by someone who gets the scratch and dent veggies from the grocery store to give to chickens, and I thought it was a great idea!
Everywhere I have asked has said they are not allowed to give me the throw-aways! So ridiculous!
Anyone met this problem and been successful in convincing them otherwise?

Lol yeah. They were really nice about it, just said they weren't allowed to give them away because of liability.
I could just tell them I'm about to go out back and maybe its a good time to throw away today's batch...

And I love my birds, but not enough to dumpster dive for them :p

Here is what I do.... Each week I do to a "farmers market" where the produce is actually pickes on the farm.... I ask and get TONS of food, watermelons, tomatoes, grapes, corn, squash, okra... and fill the back of the car up...its FREE and they let me haul off all I want!

If you think it will cut down on your feed bill.... well it might. My chickens just eat more! Look up farms or farmers markets and you will have more food than you need.

Duh.... I mean the "over ripe" food is free, not the food on the shelves. but a local produce market will do the trick!!

Uggh, I know what you mean. I asked at our local Publix grocery store about getting a little bit of over ripe produce for my ducks. They said they can't give it to me unless I fill out some form, send it to corporate to get approved, etc. Also said that pretty much only non-profit orgs. are going to get approved. A farmer's market is a great idea. I did have one near me, for a couple of weeks, and they were giving me boxes of stuff. Then, something happened (not sure what) and they closed up.
