I found that on the net and thought it'd be a great idea for added pantry storage for what comes out of the garden next year (no garden for us yet since we're still trying to get everything else done outside the house). My only concern is that I've read in a few places that you shouldn't put some fruits/veggies near each other. Once place said no onions with anything else, apples will rot tomatoes but will prevent rot in potatoes, carrots can be stored anywhere..... the net is a mess of information.

So if one of you has used or is using something like the thing in the link how do you know what items can be stored next to what? I'd hate to get halfway into the off season and have our produce go to heck on the rack.

Also wondering how (if) you can store things like cabbage and broccoli in a full head.

Thank you.

YOu might like the old book Root Cellering . Most crops that yo ucan winter over are addressed. Including temps and moisture levels. I kept 3 hug pumpkins on the stairs going to the second floor and they lasted well into spring. As each started to show rot, we tossed it for the chickens to gobble up.

My suggestion is to go for it but dont expect everything to work out perfectly. Learn what works for you and your set up.

I like that the above book suggest better varieties for over wintering; and try a number of old varieties like can be found at Sand HIll. Remember the old way was to have varieites that could winter over so that is where I find what looks like the better options rather than the most modern varieties that seem to focus on disease resistence and sweetness.
