I recently visited a breeder of these buns. I found them extremely beautiful and truly looked and felt like toys.

Anybody have any information on the breed?

This breeder may have the only velveteen lops in my province. They are quite pricey and well, all related.

It may be fun to try to duplicate the breed, although I don't have the time/space to do multi generations so I will just look at pics and drool over these buns.

if i remember right its rex over lop...

im sure you could "reproduce" it since its a relitivly new breeds and theres still a few first generations out there.

id love to do a standard rex and english lop for giant velveteens
and mini rex with holland lops for mini velveteens...they are beautiful

Maybe I could try! I'm not sure that holland lops would work to make the velveteen lops though. Since they are supposed to have the huge ears like the english and mandolin body type but the fur of the rex.

I have an english lop...but no rex, I suppose now I'll HAVE to get new bunnies.

I believe it's rex and english lop cross, I had one!

I lost her over the winter, I really like them! I wanted either them or English lops and ended up going w/ the English Lops because I couldn't find any Velveteen lop breeders around.

She is beautiful! Even in pictures they look so soft and adorable!

I love them!!!! Though the closest person I personally know that has them lives in Illinois.

The original cross is Rex and English Lop, but the breeders trying to get them approved have been breeding several generations to get them to match a set standard. Crossing a Rex and a Lop at this point isn't going to give you the same result.

Likewise, the ARBA will no longer accept "Giant" or "Mini" versions of an accepted breed-I think the Mini Satin was the last breed to make it in before that rule took effect.

I wasn't projecting I would cross an english with a rex and get actual "velveteen lops" I am aware that it takes a lot of hard work and many generations to breed true.

I just thought it would be fun to make one of my own, the culls could be part of a raw diet for my family dogs, so a ton of excess mutt buns wouldn't be a problem.

There is also a good chance you will only end up with normal furred mixed rabbits. If you want one try locating a breeder and see if they have any pet quality ones for sale. There are almost always velveteens for sale at rabbit shows www.arba.net
