Some background... I have a neighborhood flock of 6 hens. #6 was added this year and she's 20 weeks now. Over the last month she was integrated with the other 5. That went really well but now I have a brand new problem. Discovered 2 days ago that she had vent prolapse which has been repaired by my local vet. She had the vent cleaned, had what had come out pushed in and a couple sutures that will need to be in place for 2 weeks. We have no idea how the prolapse happened although it was probably from laying her first eggs. At this point I don't have faith that the fix will work especially if she lays soon or again.
My question? Is there a way to have her NEVER lay again. She's a super sweet Buff Orpington and I'm thinking she would make a great pet therapy bird so I don't want to put her down. My vet told me there were hormones but he didn't specify what and how well it worked. At this point there is no guarantee she won't try to lay in the next 2 weeks and I'm scared for her.
Has anyone tried something like this? Sounds a bit crazy I know but these girls are "pets with benefits" to me. I'd rather have her than the eggs if it came down to it.
Sweet Peeps & My Sweet Hen, Mini Pearl thank you in advance.
