hi. I’m a relative newbie. I just checked on my girls for the night and found a very bloody egg. I found on of my hens with blood on her backside and what appears to be a “hemeroid” on her vent. I’m assuming it’s prolapse. Researching past posts, I’ll give her a soak to clean her up and keep her crated in the heated garage. I’m in the burbs of Chicago and we’re experiencing below zero wind chill. Anything else I can do?

I’ve soaked her in a sink of warm water. Put preparation h on her vent and crushed up a tums and put it in some yogurt. She ate that and drank water. I’ve got her in a covered dog crate in the heated garage. I don’t believe she has an egg stuck. I just found a bloody egg. I tried to gently feel for an egg when I was bathing her. Everything felt “fleshy”. I’m not really sure what it’s supposed to feel like.

I think you're on a good track. No additional bleeding that you've noticed? I'm not sure who to tag on vent prolapse. How often has she been laying?

There are are some really good posts of you search vent prolapse. I'm guessing with it being night time she's probably put herself to bed. I'm hoping some others will chime in if anything else is necessary right now or if it's better to let her sleep and recheck in the morning.

Photos would be good.
It sounds like you've got this!
One of the most important things is to keep any exposed tissue (prolapsed tissue) moist with your ointment. In your case, you are using Prep H, that is fine. If the tissue is swollen, it may not go immediately in - that is normal, but you may want to see if you can push it back in with her next soaking and application of PrepH. It may not stay, just keep slathering on the ointment.

Is she able to poop?
Is she alert and able to drink and eat on her own?

I just checked on her. She seems to be settled in for the night. I’ll get a pic tomorrow morning. Praying she makes it. She’s young. Just starting laying about a month ago. I saw some blood on other eggs but thought it was because she just started laying. And, it was a small amount of blood. Nothing like today. Thank you for your help. I think I have a curse when it comes to my chickens. Lost 6 to a raccoon last spring, 1 to a hawk, and one silky fell in a wheel barrow after a rain and drowned. Never in my life did I think chickens could be so heartbreaking!

:hugs Oh I'm sorry! You've had a rough time.

It's good that she seems settled.
Pictures in the morning are fine.
Hydration is important - did she drink for you?
Is she able to poop?

May I ask what you feed your pullets, including treats? Sometimes birds don't eat like they should, is she at the bottom of the pecking order?

I hope you find that she was able to pull the prolapse in on her own and she is much better in the morning.

I gave her a soak again this morning. She’s eating and drinking. I found poop in her crate, (plus she pooped in her bath). Put on more preparation H. Should I keep giving her the tums? How many times a day should I soak her? I tried gently pushing it back in but it pops right back out. I’m afraid of hurting her worse.
I’m feeding them mixed flock pellets ( I also have 2 ducks) with an omega egg maker supplement. They also get veggie and salad scraps.
