Vent prolapse

You can give her 1 Tums a day for a couple of days.
It's good that she is able to poop.
With swollen tissue, a prolapse does not always stay in. Give her a soak a couple of times a day if possible and try to keep the exposed tissue cleaned and moist with your PrepH.

Is she alert, eating/drinking on her own?

Shes eating and drinking fine. LOVED the tums/ yogurt combo. I’m keeping her in the garage with a cover over the crate. Hoping she doesn’t try to lay another egg!

I don’t think your gonna get it to stay in. It doesn’t look like a terrible prolapse. I had one look like that and I let it dry and eventually it healed and the dead part fell off. They will do that with pigs when they prolapse rectally with the help of a band but she is too small for that.

That's always a worry, another egg coming when they are prolapsed.
Hopefully it will go back in soon.

There does not look to be a "dead" part there at all. Looks like pink, healthy tissue.
You cannot rubber band a prolapse in a chicken.

Okay, totally different topic. I had to look up what a miniature zebu was. I’m in love!

Yes I know you can’t rubber band a chicken, hence why I said you can’t cause they are too small. You can let it dry, heal, and fall off.

I would suggest not to let exposed tissue to dry up and fall off. Better to be patient and give the chicken supportive care, keep the tissue moist, let the swelling go down and put the tissue back in. A lot of times the hen will draw that back in.

I also would not recommend letting the prolapse dry out, since the skin will become necrotic or dead and turn black. Then the vent will be damaged, or the chicken may die of infection. It doesn’t matter too much about what type of oil is used, just keeping the pink tissue moist until you can push it back inside and it stays is what is important. The hemorrhoid cream and sometimes honey is used to help decrease the swelling in the tissue. Once you push it inside successfully, hold it in while holding the chicken in your lap for a few minutes (the things we do for our chickens, LOL.) It sometimes will keep popping out until it eventually will stay in. Good luck. Here is some reading:

Keeping it moist for days outside the body and trying to put it back in is also a huge risk, introducing a lot of bacteria into the body. The longer it’s out, the higher risk of infection. Damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Sugar is really good for taking the swelling down as well but best chance to keep the prolapse in is a suture but if she is continuing to lay then that’s not an option. No answer is the right answer, except if it works but my experience with a minor prolapse is to let the exposed tissue dry and fall off while keeping it clean. A huge prolapse is better to keep moist and inserted back in but consistent egg laying will only further push it out. My concern is another egg will make this prolapse worse.

Update: she’s continued to lay. The prolapse is sooo much worse. Almost looks like intestines. I’ve soaked her in Epsom salts and tried to gently put everything back and hold it in. The minute she pooped everything came back out. She’s quit eating and drinking. I’m pretty sure there is nothing more to do. Unfortunately I can’t bring myself to cull her myself. Trying to find someone to do the deed.
