Looking for help with sweet Chili. I noticed her with a messy butt on Friday evening and gave her a booty bath on Saturday morning, noticed she had a vent prolapse and possibly vent gleet, I treated her with some monistat and vetericyn spray, later that evening she laid an egg, Sunday gave her another bath and same treatment for her backside. After some research I read sugar helps to shrink a prolapse l, so I gave used a cold compress of sugar water and held it in for 10-15 mins. I also have been applying KY jelly to help keep it moist. I stopped the baths because I figured heat wouldn’t help. So I seeked a vet (who sees birds but not really poultry) today to see if this is something that can be fixed or is it just trying to prolong the inevitable. The vet said she has an “egg stuck and twisted uterus” and suggested X-ray and sedative to try to untwist and get the egg out ($300 with no guarantee of success). We decided to bring her home to dispatch her. 1hr after being home she laid said twisted stuck egg. I gave her a bath and lubed up and sugared her vent and pushed it back in and held it for 10mins with cool wet rag. She has been prolapse free for 48hrs now.

My questions are..

How long should I keep her inside?

Will she need to be total reintroduced into our flock?

That vet was totally wrong. Chickens get egg bound sometimes which can cause a prolapse from straining to lay. Was the egg larger than normal? There could also be another egg coming along, since the egg was stuck. But that would have happened already. When a prolapse or a stuck egg happens, the best thing to do is give a dose of calcium or Tums. That can increase the muscle tone to help lay the egg, and to help the body retract the prolapse tissue. Keep it moist with oil ointment, honey, or a paste made of sugar and a few drops of water. Since she has kept the prolapse in for 2 days, she could go back out with her flock as long as she has no redness at her vent. Keep a close eye on her. Prolapses can recur later on.

Yes the prolapse has been gone for 48hrs, she hasn’t laid since Tuesday. She has been inside in a darker room with just chick feed, because I read to try to stop laying. We know if it happens again it will be best to say good bye to her.
