When I built the coop I installed a roof tent but I'm pretty sure I need more ventilation because the coop smells pretty bad of ammonia. My question is if I install vents at the top of the front or back walls would this work or do the vents have to be in the roof. I don't want to cut holes in the roof if I don't need to

Ventilation is fine in the walls if it's up high - above their heads. Another way to cut down on the ammonia is to add fresh bedding and stir it up. You can also dry things out by sprinkling DE in there.

Make sure you have an inlet near the bottom to allow air to enter to maintain the flow through the vents. With little flowing in, there cannot be a lot flowing out.
