Vent sexing waterfowl ***Updated

I have 3 large ones I have no clue what sex they are. Their butts are so very fluffy the last time I tried to look I couldn't even see their vent.

Yeah it's easier on little ones. I am going to attempt to sex my 3 month old african. I didn't sex him because I meant to sell him but nobody wanted him an took all his siblings away. I have a feeling he is a male with how he acts. He is real agressive at the dinner table chasing and honking at everything that get near where he decides to eat.

He is going to be difficult but it can be done. You just need to follow the same steps except the bird has to be placed over a knee or a table end due to the size. I have two month old chinese goslings that didn't sell either and I will be checking them as well.

LOL I think the fun part is going to be locating the vent under all that fluff! And then trying to hold them still! They hate having anything mess with that area!

This is great - I have three Sebastapol juveniles almost 3 months old that I would love to know their sex. Thanks so much for posting this thread!

I will be looking forward to the pictures...still trying to figure all this out! Are the females more red/dark pink looking? I can never be sure if it's really a female or just a male without the penis protruding.

I tried to get some pics for this thread today but it just didn't happen. Spruce my 3 month gosling kicked me pretty good as he was not happy with anyone poking near his privates. I checked my pair of month old goslings and both gave such a fight I was unable to work the camera and check them. I'm going to try and take some tomorrow as I will be checking my week old ducklings and things should be easier.

So here is my results for today:

Spruce: Undetermined, he kicked me too much that I gave up trying.

White Chinese gosling: Male
Brown Chinese or African (starting to look more like African): Female.

As promised I got some pics of the vents. I am going to try and get some shots of how exactly to hold the birds while checking. I have some young ducklings that should be easy to do a one person operation with. The pics I've added are of my month and a half old muscovies. At this age it is a lot easier to tell what they are but males can still be mistaken if they hold in.

That's awesome, I was able to determine mine are two little girls!

YAY!

Thanks so much for pics and information!

Is it the same with chickens? I've got some st run banties to figure out. I have my suspicious by just watching their behavior. The boys often face off, poke their chests out and hop around threateningly at each other as if about to fight, They do that even if another just crosses their path. I don't know know if the girls do all that too.

I plan to add some more pics besides the ones in the first post. I will try to add some of the process by Monday or Tuesday.

Chickens are hard to sex! Once you invert their vents there is a bump and depending on it's position and size and even shape tells the sexes apart. The problem is the clitoris and the penis look alike... just tiny bumps. It gets difficult because of all the different shapes... some pullets have two bumps, some cockerels look like pullets... Even with a guide it was so confusing I gave up. I could get a scan of the page but it helped me very little maybe someone else can do better I don't know? *shrugs*
