Vent sexing

It’s with great humility I have to admit to vent sexing a batch of newly hatched chicks. It worked, but the chicks are more fragile than I knew. I’m convinced hens died b/c I squeezed too much looking for the nub.

I think this is the learning curve of vent sexing. This is why it’s better for an industrial setting than a backyard farm. Great way to learn the consequences of one’s own hubris. The old adage of “Nothing ventured, nothing gained” may be true, but the cost isn’t necessarily one we would want to pay.
