Hi all,

My poor oatmeal girl is dealing with bumble foot I believe. I’ve been soaking her in epsom salt, cleaning with chlorhexadine, applying prid and wrapping. It’s not seeming to get better at all and my poor girl doesn’t even want to walk on her feet anymore. I’ve been getting mixed reviews on how often to change the dressings so maybe that’s why it’s not healing properly but any advice would be great!

Poor Oatmeal!

How long and how often have you been treating her? Here's a post I have saved from someone else on how to deal with bumblefoot (without surgery). Sounds like you need to consistently soak, prid, and wrap for up to a week before the scab softens enough to pull it out. Gross, I know, but it's a necessary evil in order for her to get better. Otherwise, the infection just seems to linger in the foot.

It’s been about 2 weeks, almost 3. I changed it every 3ish days. After soaking I was able to pull out the plug but nothing else would come out. I let it breath for a few days with no wrap since it was so hot here in Cali but her right foot began to swell. Pulled the plug again and nothing is coming out again. I’m trying the pool noodle method to see if that helps. Should I be changing it everyday or less?

Did you pack the hole with antibiotic ointment, like that post suggests? There will still be some residual stuff in there, even after the plug’s removed, that will need to be treated.

I’m going to tag a few people that are more knowledgeable to try and help: @Eggcessive @Wyorp Rock

I have treated at least 4 or 5 cases of bumblefoot successfully. I have found that if there is any of the yellowish infection is left it will not fully heal. I take a sterilized utility knife blade and tweezers to try to get it all out. I keep applying vetricyn, betadine and pack with neosporin and rewrap then checking every couple of days until I have gotten it all. Sometimes you have to dig around at it even if it looks somewhat healed up or it will just keep coming back!

Bsmac, is this article a good approximation to what you do? Trying to learn myself, since I haven't dealt with bumblefoot yet.
