Hi all,

My poor oatmeal girl is dealing with bumble foot I believe. I’ve been soaking her in epsom salt, cleaning with chlorhexadine, applying prid and wrapping. It’s not seeming to get better at all and my poor girl doesn’t even want to walk on her feet anymore. I’ve been getting mixed reviews on how often to change the dressings so maybe that’s why it’s not healing properly but any advice would be great!

Poor Oatmeal!

How long and how often have you been treating her? Here's a post I have saved from someone else on how to deal with bumblefoot (without surgery). Sounds like you need to consistently soak, prid, and wrap for up to a week before the scab softens enough to pull it out. Gross, I know, but it's a necessary evil in order for her to get better. Otherwise, the infection just seems to linger in the foot.

It’s been about 2 weeks, almost 3. I changed it every 3ish days. After soaking I was able to pull out the plug but nothing else would come out. I let it breath for a few days with no wrap since it was so hot here in Cali but her right foot began to swell. Pulled the plug again and nothing is coming out again. I’m trying the pool noodle method to see if that helps. Should I be changing it everyday or less?

Did you pack the hole with antibiotic ointment, like that post suggests? There will still be some residual stuff in there, even after the plug’s removed, that will need to be treated.

I’m going to tag a few people that are more knowledgeable to try and help: @Eggcessive @Wyorp Rock

I have treated at least 4 or 5 cases of bumblefoot successfully. I have found that if there is any of the yellowish infection is left it will not fully heal. I take a sterilized utility knife blade and tweezers to try to get it all out. I keep applying vetricyn, betadine and pack with neosporin and rewrap then checking every couple of days until I have gotten it all. Sometimes you have to dig around at it even if it looks somewhat healed up or it will just keep coming back!

Bsmac, is this article a good approximation to what you do? Trying to learn myself, since I haven't dealt with bumblefoot yet.

I’ve just been using prid, but I can switch to neosprorin if that’s better! Online is giving so many options, I didnt know what’s the best option.

There’s definitely some yellow stuff in one of the feet. I’ve tried to use tweezers to get it out but the hole is pretty small and it’s hurting her when I do. Does vetricyn have egg withdrawal? Also how will I know when to stop pulling the scab off like once it’s healed compared to it being the infection still? Sorry it’s my first time dealing with this

Yes, you want triple-antibiotic ointment, for sure, once the hole is open. Really get it in there, then wrap it back up to hold everything in and keep it clean.

I think you just want to pull out the plug and not necessarily fish around beyond that. The Vetericyn spray (unless you mean another product) shouldn't have an egg withdrawal, since there's barely anything in it.

I'll also tag someone else that could have bumblefoot knowledge: @Debbie292d

That is where I would use the utility knife blade to try to remove as much as possible. It may cause a bit of pain but having the continued infection causes them pain too. Vetricyn would not require egg withdrawal. If it is healed with no infection left there won`t be a black scab just normal looking skin. Sometimes a bit of the infection lingers around the perimeter of the hole the scab left. That needs to be removed if it looks abnormal. More photos since you have worked on her might be helpful too.
