I am looking for good illustrations on the mater male female hen or rooster. Also cons to vent sexing. How can you hurt the bird what where and when. Google is kind of sparse on the matter.

Vent sexing has to be done within the first 24 hours and is very hard to do. it's really easy to hurt them permanently

One of the cons is that it takes a LOT of practice even with instant feedback.

I saw on a documentary that some professional training programs don't provide any pictures or instruction other than having the students watch pros for a short time. Then they just do it. They do many thousands a day and eventually, months years later, they start getting it right. Until they get it right often enough, the chicks get sexed again by a pro. The training program had tried other ways and went back to this as it was the fastest, most cost effective way. It was in Japan, I think. I don't know if training is done differently in other places.

And, yes, it is very easy to hurt the chicks. That is why vent sexed bantams are not available. The pros could tell the difference but even they can't do it without hurting some of them because they are that much more delicate. This part is from sources I don't remember so am not sure how reliable they are other than I considered at least some to be reliable.

Please do not vent sex them. If you really need to know ASAP, look into DNA testing.

I know someone who did this as a career. He was born in the US to Japanese immigrants but he trained in Japan. His training took YEARS. This is really not something you master by watching YouTube videos. It was a struggle for him to retire, hatcheries really don't want to lose the guys like him who would bring their averages up.

I tried vent sexing ducklings and the vents showed 1 male and two females but they all turned out male. I don't know how it is for chickens, I just tell by the comb size at around a few weeks old

Ducklings are really simple but chicken chicks and gamebird chicks are just a whole nother ball game. Their vents and reproductive organs vary so much in appearance, there's just really no practical way for backyard keepers to learn it. I've tried and watched folks do it and it is just so complicated. DNA sexing or sticking with birds that can be sexed early on by down coloring is really your only bet with chickens.

Can't learn unless I try. Nothing is ever impossible. Like the old say You can make an omelet without cracking some eggs. I get the hint I might kill a few hundred birds to learn maybe I won't. Now its going to happen and I am going to learn so constructive advice is best. There is no not going to do it.
