I wasn't sure if this should go here or in the raising baby chicks section...

Anyway, I saw a Dirty Jobs episode where he goes to McMurray's and talks to a feather sexer and a vent sexer. As .... odd and disturbing as it seemed at first, it seems to me the only real ways of figuring it out early on.

I was wondering, have any of you ever attempted vent sexing on your new hatches, or just trying to figure out if the hatchery did it right, or what your straight run will end up being?

here's the clip if anyone is interested in it. It's kinda cool.

There's a book called, Sexing All Fowl, Baby Chicks, Game Birds, Cage Birds by Loyl Stromberg that you could read.
(I haven't...yet).
The chicken sexers pay lots of $$ to learn the techniques which were developed by the Japanese. They learn by examining the adult birds first and work their way down to day-olds.

I have no idea. I figure that I will give it a go when I get my order in. I'll practice on the ones that are supposed to be layers, then check all the cornish rock chicks as well, and put a lil pink or blue band on thier legs or something designating the sex I think they are. It'll just take a few weeks to find out if I was right or not.

OM Gosh.... the way they toss the chicks........I guess they are pretty resilient!!!! I've got to know did anyone try this???? can you try it on two week olds???
