Ventilation hole? Watering hole?

I see incubators in people's pictures and I cannot figure out why there are two holes on the side of the incubator (hova-bator). Can anyone please tell me why they have these holes?

I am looking to buy a hova bator right now which is why I ask.

I have a hovabator-there are 5 little holes on top for ventilation and two larger ones with plugs on top to help let out humidty when needed. I use the whole smack dab in the middle of top to slowly pour water in every couple of days to keep humidty up-that way I dont open the bator!!! I dont have any on the sides except for a tight fitting one that is used for my turner in it...Now I have to look again hmmm

why doesnt everyone use the top holes rather than poking holes in the side as well?

Cause if you fill the bator or put in a fair number of eggs centered in the middle all the vents are blocked. Also I put holes in the side to increase ventilation during a large hatch that was raising the humidity too high.

So if I plan on putting all 42 eggs inside the hova-bator I can't put water down through the top ventilation hole? Why not?

because if the bator is full then you will just pour the water on the eggs and get them wet!
