Hi!

Looking for opinions and recommendations. I'm revamping this old shed/coop. Its 7.4'x5.4' on the inside. Its going to be a temporary home for the chickens until we can get a new one built but it also needs to suit the chickens needs during that time.

1. It's lacking ventilation. It has the pop door and one window and that's it. It is insulated and has metal siding so I'm looking for recommendations to add more ventilation. Ideal would be to add another window and replace the door with a new door that has a window in it that can open. However, I'm trying to keep the costs as low as possible as this is going to be temporary. So needing any and all ideas on how to add ventilation and how to cut through the metal and walls of this coop.

2. I'm going to add an L shaped poop board in the coop but I also need to add nesting boxes. Has anyone had experience putting the nesting boxes under the poop boards ? I'm trying to maximize space. Bump out nesting boxes would be ideal but I'm not handy enough to make a cut like that 😆

Here's a picture of what the coop looks like. It's not the prettiest but it will do for what I need, after I make the necessary modifications 😊

First thing I'd do is remove the soffit covers, front and back.
What do those areas look like from the inside?

This thread has some good info about adding windows to a metal shed:

Putting nests under poop board can work, but may be harder to reach nests as poop boards are generally 2' deep and nests only 12-14".
That said 2' poop boards are going to take up a good bit of space in a 7x5 coop.
How many birds are you keeping there...and for how long?

Thanks for the thread link. Great ideas there.

I thought about and measured the space the poop boards would occupy but I think it's going to work. Getting under the poop boards to reach the nest won't be a problem for me, lol. Not the most convenient but it will work. I more or less wanted to make sure that would be an okay spot for then.

I plan on 8-10 birds. I'm not sure how long. Thats why trying to make it a best as I can right now in case they have to be in there a bit longer than anticipated. 😊

Suggestion for ventilation: replace the door with one made of hardware cloth (wood frame, hardware cloth covering it.) That way you don't have to cut any holes in the sides of the shed, and can put the original door back on later if you want to. (Could buy a screen door, but you would probably still have to add hardware cloth because screen is so weak--you need to keep out raccoons and dogs, not mosquitos and flies.)
