Venting....Got my hatchery chicks today...

mcmurry sends chicks priority mail.....that can take up to 5 days! its 3-5 for priority......................thats toooooo long.. order from a hatchery that sends express and the weather wont mattter, if they shipped their chicks anytime of year and it takes 5 days they will die! order from a good hatchery like cackle or someplace else that DOES NOT ship priority mail and even in 3 feet of snow your birds will be fine . i have had birds arrive in early feb at temps in the 20s and if they are packed right and shipped quickly, they are fine. mc murry stinks.

Agreed.

thank you! everyone gets on me for not liking mcmurry, but you just cant ship live animals priority mail! too many peeps die, and too many peopel are disappointed because of 3-5 days in transit! its just too long.

DC is the Post Office Distribution Center. If you call your local Post Office they can tell you where it's at. I live in a Rural area so i have to drive about 50 minutes to get to the closest Post Office Distribution Center.

Most (but not all) local feed stores don't order their chicks vaccinated. Vaccination cost's extra so most feed stores skip it.

Sorry, that is not a mcmurry thing, all hatcheries that I know of ship priority mail. They also guarantee 100% live delivery, if they don't arrive alive, they will refund or replace and most will even do that for the first 4 or 5 days. Without you sending pictures of dead chicks or anything else. I know it is not perfect, but it is a risk you take with sending them through the mail system.

Just wanted to chime in, I work for a small internet company that does alot of shipping, and priority mail USPS is stated at 2-3 business days. There is absolutely no reason why a priority package should take 5 days, that's just ridiculous. Standard letters, first class mail, can arrive in 5 days, but that is just ridiculous for Priority.

And yes, other hatcheries ship Priority as well. Ideal ships priority (I have my label right here, it is priority), and I received mine in 2 days. Anything beyond 3 days should be taken up with the PO, that is just unacceptable.

Well, I wanted to update on my second order - got it today. I had 4 SLW's, 4 frizzles, 3 silkies, and 5 Milles to be replaced - they sent those, and then an extra frizzle and SLW. Of course, the bad news - I still lost 3 of the Milles, with the 4th looking not good, 2 silkies will be lost by the end of the day, and I have my doubts about one of the frizzles...I was a bit nervous, because when I went to pick them up, the PO was dead quiet. Then when the the lady gave them to me, she was very upset because she thought they all were dead.
I think this time I am just going to get a refund, and go back to welp, or buy locally if anyone has them...

Anyway, I have the day off, so I should be able to get some pics up later!

that is just so sad to hear. I'm two weeks away from my chicks from McMurray. I haven't had trouble in the past, but two years ago my mother in law ordered broilers and out of 80, lost seven in the first week. Hope we get some warm weather here in North Dakota about that time... Good luck with the survivors. Sad to hear so many troubles!

I've alway ordered from Mt Healthy Hatchery in past years and never had any lose of chicks during shipment or immediatly after. However, I always ordered during warmer weather. This year I had my first order from Murray mcmurray and had 3 dead on arrival and 2 die the within 24hours. I'm pretty sure it was because of the cold weather. And they did offer the refund for credit.

I would be bummed too

hopefully you will get the chicks you are wanting soon. Murry Mcmurray is in Iowa where its Cold still - I don't know what part of the country you are in - but I'm going to wait until it warms up before I order more. Good Luck!
