He was great to deal with. I PayPal'ed him the money to save him the eBay fees and wait time. He shipped quickly.
Me, too! After I PayPal'd the money, it was about 5 minutes later he emailed me that they were shipped!! Woot!!

We get bad freezing during the winter so I'm going to use a heat-tape setup on the bucket so avoid freeze-ups...

What took me totally by surprise was that [email protected] doesn't just talk about service. He answers email seven day a week you get honest and reliable information. He has even directed me to another company for an item I wanted. I always see him first for anything I need.
Well, I finally got my water bucket built .. it has 5 horizontal water nipples..it's a 2-1/2 gallon bucket with lid. So after testing it overnight with some water in it to make sure it didn't leak (which it didn't...yay!), I filled it up and took it outside to the coop. I removed the plastic waterer from the coop and stayed in there for awhile tapping the thingie to get them interested...not! So I told them plain and simple "girls, this is your new waterer...mommy is tired of spilled water so figure it out!"

Today when I went out there to give them their daily treat, and not knowing if they'd "figured it out" yet, I sat in there for a time and tapped the thingie on one of the nipples and they came right over and started drinking....DUH!! Happy day..happy day!!

Hi !!
Ok, you got my attention. How do you use heating tape to keep water from freezing?
I have a heat base I am sick of using and even it can't help during -10 or more below.
The polar vortexes came thru here 2x last Jan. at -30 below wind-chill each time.
I need a better way.
Please share,
Thanks,
Karen
(don't they peck the heat tape?)

I'm going to get the type that I can coil down in the bottom inside the bucket...I seem to remember seeing a 'waterproof' type at the hardware store.

If you use a heater in the pail and a table top fountain pump. Run from the pail through the nipple run and back to the pail. You should not need heat tape. Moving water does not readily freeze and being warm on top of that it should be good at those temps.

Here are baby quail and some chicks using a horizontal nipple. Babies can do it, so adult birds are no problem. It's just about forming a new habit.
my chicks are about 4 weeks and are having a hard time with the horizontal nipple system. They keep trying to bite it rather than peck it. Suggestions? I don't want them to get dehydrated.

The fact that they are investigating shows that they know where the water is. In all honesty, they just have to be given the chance for their curiosity and natural attraction to red to kick in. At 4 weeks, they will do it on their own if they aren't confused by the introduction of any other type of drinker. It's hard wired into their brains. I've never had a chick older than two weeks old fail to learn without any help. You won't see any drops or gushing of water since their beaks are still small and they drink close to the pin inside the red indentation. They also like to tap and play with it. It's a bird thing.
