I have a chicken with a sour crop that will not empty. I’ve given her oils, yogurt, Acv and massaged her crop many times over the last few days and nothing seems to work, her crop is always a full water balloon and she’s getting more and more lethargic each day. I’ve had this hen since I was in elementary school, and other than this sour crop which started a few days ago she’s always been very healthy, laying eggs fairly often and always a very active forager. Her belly feels normal so I don’t think there’s an internal issue causing this, could there be and I just can’t feel it? I’m becoming desperate for something to do to save her. I know making her throw it up is dangerous but if it’s a last resort I think I could do it if it gives her a chance. How would I go about that or are there any other ways I could help it empty other than that risky one?

How old is she? I have lost all hens in who I have seen impacted or sour crop. They all had a secondary crop issue related to either a reproductive disorder, cancer, or unkown disease. Crops tend to slow down with those problems, and worms or failure of the gizzard can also cause a crop problem.

@azygous and @Two Crows have some good articles about treating crop issues if you haven’t seen them. Once the sour crop has been going on for a long time, it can be difficult to cure. Here is some reading:
