Hi all,
Been posting the last two weeks about my sick chicks. There did seem to be some confusion about what was wrong with them and I was grasping at straws. No chicken vets around me.

After 2 weeks of dealing and loosing chicks I can clearly see two separate things going on.

My Australorps do seem to have a respiratory thing. Bubbles in their eyes, coughing (finally heard it) crusty nostrils, sometimes with discharge. They were on duramycin for 7 days because I couldn't get LS-50. They didn't improve, just got worse. Yesterday I got the LS-50 and they have been on it for 24 hrs or so. Not much better yet.

My light brahmas don't have the respiratory symptoms. They just stop walking and then can't eat or drink.

All are housed together in the same coop with 1 silkie.

So far two have died out of the 12 I started with: 1 silkie and 1 Lt Brahma.

Out of desperation I took 1 brahma and 1 australorp to the State Lab this morning. Neither were doing well at all and were close to death. Now I've lost 1 silkie, 2 brahmas, and 1 australorp.

Just talked with the vet who is confused. He did not find anything wrong with the Australorp I took in. She wasn't coughing but did have very strange looking, very small pupils (almost shrunken looking) and she did weird things with her head and neck.

He found nothing much with the brahma, just a few worms, nothing he would call a serious infestation.

He sent cultures and is checking for AI and MG. I won't know until next week the results of those tests.

My questions:
1. The remaining chicks are 7 wks old now. They were fine it seemed until they reached 5 wks. When do you worm chicks, if at all and what do ya'll use to do that?

2. Got any ideas what might be going on with the Brahmas? I have had 2 that got like this and both have died. Still have one more that is not doing well. Eyes are closed.

My Australorps do seem to have some sort of respiratory thing going on.

I'm waiting to hear back about the cultures.

Any thoughts from anyone?

Sorry, I don't have any new ideas. I know that the parasite tests done at the vet's office often don't show what is really going on. The vet needs to do a special "avian float" fecal test. That whole "bubbly eyes/coughing/crusty nostrils thing doesn't sound good at all. I hope you're able to save some. Good luck to you.

Hi there.. i have had the same thing with two of my wyandotte chicks. I check on them every morning and they were fine and showed no unusual symptoms... when i returned after work one was already gone. The others were normal... poops are normal.. then came home to find one struggling, just laying there not eating, drinking or walking. She was still breathing so i took her with me and monitored her behaviors... she was doing something weird with her head and neck also.. like moving it back and was very uncoordinated like she couldnt keep it up. Eyes were closed.. i tried to give her some water drops to hydrate her but with no luck, she passed away shortly after. I have no idea what this could be either... breeder says they have been vacc for mareks and use only medicated starter.. if i find out anything i will be sure to get back to you...

Also.. havent noticed respiratory symptoms other than one of the other breeds sometimes has its mouth open with no sound coming out.. almost like panting? But its not too hot in the brooder.. hmmm puzzling.
I hope your chicks pull through, good luck!

Thanks for your posts. Actually, I didn't go to a vet I took the last 2 sick chicks to our State Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab were they did a necropsy and made cultures.

We just did a thorough check of the remaining 8 chicks. Three of them look really good with no symptoms.

Four more look much improved. They are moving around the coop, eating and drinking. They still have the crusty noses but not as bad as yesterday morning.

The last one was just sitting there with nasty closed eyes. When my husband picked her up and put her outside in a ring pen we have. She opened her eyes and started to walk around and peck at the grass and dirt. Then she went over to the food dish and started to eat.

One by one I held each one and looked them over really well. They each got 2 droppers of the baby vitamins and baby nose drops in their nostrils. We returned all to the coop but the one with the eye problems. Her eye lids are closed and a bit swollen, red and sore looking. She is in the house now. Gave her the vitamins, nose drops, put saline drops on her eye lids, and held her while I gave her dropper after dropper of medicated water.

They have all been on the LS-50 for about 32 1/2 hrs now, maybe it's finally starting to work. Who knows?

Does anyone have suggestions about what age I should worm these chicks and what I should use to do that?

Thanks
