So we had 12 call ducks which where kept in a pen but as they started to fly and venture out to our pond several died, along with these we also had a trio of white Campbell ducks who never left the pen and in the few years we have had chickens and ducks none have died to predators as we have a solid electric fence. However recently one night a fox managed to get in and killed the two white femailes and injured the male, who is now fit and healthy again. As we only have males left we have kept most of them together but recently the Campbell has started to remove their down from the tops of their heads so we seperated them at night which was where this was occurring. Although one night some one forgot to do this and in the morning one of the call ducks was seriously Injured with a full bald head, blood down his face and swollen eyes. Since then we have kept him separate by his eyes slowly scabbed and closed up and his eyelids seem to be moving up his head. Is there anything that we could possibly do or will someone give me the reassurance that putting him down is the right thing
sorry for the circumstances. First of all I would be tempted to find a home for the drake causing the damage. It's really not his fault as it is breeding season, but he'd have to go. If the injured drake is eating and drinking, I would be tempted to apply antibiotic ointment on his head, face and eyes. The skin on the top of his head may be constricting and pulling his eyelids up. Lubricating/moistening might help. I'd give it a try. Good luck.
