I am very interested in incubating and hatching eggs. I have read some about it. Anyone have and advise or experience to give me. Think it's a good idea? Bad idea? Worth the trouble?

BEWARE!!!!! It is extreemly addicting! But I say come join us... you will have a blast!

I have read a lot of posts of people who say that pretty much it isn't worth it and how their eggs aren't hatching. Do the eggs you put in it have to all have been laid on the same day? How do you know which breed is which after you put them in?

Very addicting! My only advice would be to get a quality incubator. The Little Giant incubators are really tough for beginners, so I'd pass on them. I hear the Hovabator 1588 w/ turner is idiot-proof. I've seen a few cabinet incubators come up for sale in our area, so keep checking Craigslist!

I write on the shell to keep track of them.

They don't have to be laid on the same day. The fresher they are the better chance they'll hatch. Any fertile egg is in a kind've dormant state when it's laid - you have to start incubating it in order for it to develop. That's how you can set a bunch of eggs at once, even if they were laid at different times, and all the eggs will hatch at about the same time.

Can you give me a brief outline of the process? How many day of what and such

well a chicken and you have to have a rooster for fertile eggs

collect them daily...doesnt have to be the same day but better to not keep them over 10 days...

when you store them, on the counter is ok...smaller side of the egg down, fatter up...for the air cell

I place my egg carton with eggs Ive collected one side higher than the other, and during the day I gently turn them turning the carton and placing the other end up.

your bator has to be running at least 3 days prior so that you can set your temps/humidity and know its working right if not you can adjust them before the eggs go in.

Need a bator, and a hygrometer that you calibrate...as they all come messed up from the stores, most do. They cant be fixed but you can see how far off yours is...Mine is off by 8% and I have to ADD that to my readings
