A couple of years ago I attended a poultry show in Inverness, Florida and there was the largest white goose (Embden gander?) that I have ever seen. It must have stood about 4 feet tall !! There was also a giant dewlap Toulouse there too. If you attended, do you remember who had them? Or does anybody know who else might have them? Does Holderreads have them? Somebody must surely know what I am talking about and I hope someone can help me locate eggs, goslings or young geese that measure up. I live here in Florida and my email is charlindabob at yahoo dot com. Thanks to all.....Bob

I have some embdems that are large and seem to still be growing larger. But even the ganders with their heads stretched up are not 4 feet tall. Maybe around 3 feet. I will have to note on a fence or something to get a better idea of how tall they are. There bodies are a lot bigger than the chinese I have,

I know Holderread's in Oregon have show quality HUGE Embden geese, they don't sell eggs but will ship goslings anywhere. They advertise their Embdens as the very large variety.

You might be able to advertise that you are seeking Embden eggs from Holderread birds on the various egg/poultry boards. The goslings they sell are pretty spendy.

I bought a pair of American Lavender geese from them, and they have been super healthy, with correct conformation and yep, lavender feathers

. I am very pleased with them, and I met the Holderreads, VERY good people devoted to their breeding program, which is if not THE best for waterfowl, one of the best!

Thanks everyone for your replies. When I attended the poultry show in Inverness, FL a couple of years ago, I wasn't really interested in geese at that time, but I kept returning to where these geese were to admire them and stood in awe of their size. I just cannot emphasize enough just how big these geese were. Yes, I was impressed. There were very few geese there and the Embdens were just super. I have tried to find the exhibitor, but to no avail. I believe his first name was Carl, but anyway, I think I will get my order in to Holderread's in hopes that I might raise some giants! Thanks again....Bob, central Florida

Usually geese will get just slightly bigger in a cooler climate, I have heard southern Showmen complaining about that for years, how they are at a disadvantage when showing against birds from MN or WI.

LOL.... Slightly bigger? My brother shows his africans and those numbers from Holderreads are nothing compared to what we see up here. I know one of my brother's white african ganders is at least 45 pounds. His brown african gander is about 40-45 pounds. At the MN State Poultry show last year, someone brought in some from Indiana that absolutely dwarfed these. I think that same person has buff & grey toulouse that had to be in the 50-60 pound range. Wild Plum's emden gander was taller but didn't have as much mass in the body.

C'mon up here!!! There are lots of good waterfowl breeders in this area. You can help me carry in all those lunkers to coop in.

Suppose I help you coop out, you wouldn't miss just one goose would you? You are aware that there are both upper and lower limits on the weight of geese in the various weight classes? Most judges will overlook the fact that the goose is far larger than they should be if the rest of the factors are there but every once in a while one wants to follow the rules, He usually is not invited back to Nothern shows.
