I'm out of town for the summer and my mom is taking care of my animals. 2 ducks have been killed in the last 2 weeks. She has been patching up every possible hole and they got in again and attacked my muscovy duck :(

Her head is bloody but looks mostly like torn off feathers. She has a very large (my mom says it is the diameter of a quarter) puncture wound that is also very deep. The attack happened yesterday evening.

My mom gave her a penicillin shot this morning and a dose of oral cipro. She irrigated the puncture and packed it with triple antibiotic ointment. I have no idea if the packing is a good idea.

I told her to irrigate again tomorrow morning really well with sterile saline.

Has anyone had a wound like this heal?

My mom is up for anything, thank goodness for her. There's no vets here that will see ducks but we have human docs who are willing to help.

Thank you.

Isolate the wounded hen.
you should clean the large wound with worm water and antiseptic soap, disinfect with Iodine and spread antibiotic ointment, repeat this daily fir 5-7 days. If the lung is punctured it could be a problem, she will need some vet advice. I would give her some vitamins an electrolytes, and some rich food(crushed boiled egg, some tuna fish) to relief som of her stress levels. In this period I would check the wound daily if You saw any sign of infection, puss, oozing liquids, etc, you should give her some antibiotic orally or by injection. Baytril or Tylan are good choice.

Don't eat the chicken and her eggs if you give her this antibiotics.
